    You should ALWAYS update.

Your problems are caused by you not know what you're doing, not by updates.

    according to linuxmint.com/blog

    # Upgrading Ubuntu is not safer than upgrading Linux Mint. It’s equally risky.
    # Ubuntu doesn’t mention the risks involved in package and release upgrades. Their policy is to fix whatever gets broken and to assume that the regressions caused on your system will get solved by future upgrades.

Most recommended ang fresh install instead of upgrading, labi na kun imo install kay Long Term Support. Mas ok ang LTS ug mas stable.

The good thing with linux is kung naay ma broken during upgrade, you can turn back to a working setup. Kinahanglan lang gyud kahibalo ka kung asa niya gipang butang ang mga files nga gi install, remove them manually (whenever di na madala using synaptic). Kinahanglan pud ma edit (remove anything related to the broken package from /var/lib/dpkg/status) ang listahan sa apt before ka maka install ug working copy sa package. After ma limpyo nimo tanan, you can install the older version of the broken package.

Kung kapoyan mo clean-up manually, a fresh install will make things new (15minutes installation on a good system, kaya ra kaayo). Just backup first your important files before installing a new system.

Kung gusto ug mag experiment, pag install ug separate system (can be on another partition nga bootable or using a virtual machine) just for testing and evaluation and leave at least one stable setup for daily work.
