I don't agree with the COMELEC decision. They have no right to rule on moral grounds. They should have dealt with more substantive matters like Ladlad's qualifications as sectoral representative under the partylist law, i.e. that they come from a sector that is "underrepresented and marginal." The kind of thinking exhibited by the Comelec commissioners is exactly the kind of homophobic thinking Ladlad is trying to address.

Let the homosexuals and lesbians run under partylist representation and allow the voters to decide whether they deserve a seat in congress. Not some old fart election commisioners with a stilted fire-and-brimstone sense of morality.

Homosexuality is a reality. Compared to 20 years ago, our present society has become increasingly tolerant of homosexuality. While I don't necessarily approve of everything homosexuals do from a personal standpoint, I firmly believe many of them make valuable contributions to our society

As a prominent (and very heterosexual) politician once commented, "Unsa kaha ang Sinulog kung walay bayot... puwerteng ugaha!"

    Read this editorial

TO “COME out,” versus to languish “in the closet,” liberates lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) from the repression and denial of their chosen sexual orientation or gender identity.

While many people maintain a gender identity that conforms to their biological ***, others do not, notes Think before you speak. Don't say "That's So Gay.".

For LGBTs in the country, the lifelong search for gender identity and expression is more fraught with challenges.

Aside from dealing with the homophobia fed by a conservative and macho culture, the LGBT community claims it is also up against institutions that deny their human rights.

Recently, a local group protested the discrimination of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for denying accreditation to “Ang Ladlad” as a party-list for the 2010 election.

According to the Nov. 20 Sun.Star Cebu article written by Justin K. Vestil and Princess Dawn Felicitas, the Comelec’s Second Division cited, as basis for the denial, “moral grounds and fear that the youth will be exposed to an environment that does not conform to the teachings of our faith.”

Comelec has no right to deny party lists based on morality. Rather, they should deny them based on the law. I don't think LGBT needs a representative in Congress, but that is somehow another topic. It's just that Comelec rejected them for the wrong reason.

My opinion is that they should just remove party list from all elections! While party lists are supposed to be for marginalized groups of people, this system is over exploited. Who is that guy who goes to Congress claiming he/she is the representative of all so-and-so in the Philippines? In this case, are all LGBT people going to register with the Comelec, entitling them to vote who should represent them in Congress? Because that did not or will not happen, then just scrap the whole thing. It's just some people pretending they represent some group while enriching themselves and not doing anything for the truly marginalized people.
