IMO: actually you can create a lot of great pics with your kitlens(18-55mm) its a matter of how you create your shots.

i suggest, if your still getting to know your cam, to get the feel of the kitlens than looking for another lens...

a lot of pictures posted here were shot with kitlens... to mention a few... chipmunk, noelie, dice.... and the rest... even some of the shots by the great karlo matuguinas wer produced with the mighty kitlens..

so try to push your cam to its limits and see what you can do...

congrats on your new cam! and happy shooting... just keep posting on the thread.. im sure you'll learn a lot

actually, ang numbers ang tawag ana nila focal length. it really depends upon your style. unsa mas ganahan nimo i shoot. landscape? then 18-55 kitlens will do. portrait? pwede gihapun na ang kitlens pero dili lang au nindot ug bokeh (blurring of background). you're better off having a 50mm f/1.8. actually, mao nang naay kitlens coz it can do a lot of things right out of the box.

pero there are longer zooms available kung gusto jud ka so you can focus on far out of reach subjects. naay all around zooms like 18-200mm.. i like the 18-270mm from tamron better (more bang for the buck). as for me, i changed my 18-55 to 18-105mm. just for the reason of versatility and i was given a fair price for the lens. i also got a 70-300mm because i want to have a longer reaching lens.

depende ra jud na sa what you want to do and what results you want to have.

pero if ang main objective pa lang nimo as of now is to get to know you're cam.. then the kitlens will suffice. ask around in this forum lang for more info and advice.

congrats on your new cam. happy shooting to you. apil nya sinulog photo contest. lingaw2x lang gud.

congrats!! maayo kaayo na para Sinulog!!! weee! burger burger burger!!!

yups, just enjoy you kit-lens... be sure to put a filter lang sa lens for protection lang...

    yups sakto si homeryap...
get to know your cam sah and then feel the kit-lens and later decide unsa jud gusto nimo..

read tutorials about basic photography to learn more

Parehas tag cam bro, newbie pa pud ko..

check me out sa flickr lang bro: h0t_ice

Ang kana focal length bro, mag depend ra gyud na sa imu type of shooting. Pero kay bag.o paman kaha imu cam, i would discourage you in buying a new lens.

Inexpensive consumer zooms are ok when you're starting out. With the help of tools like ExposurePlot, you can get statistics re the focal lengths you use the most (among other things) and you can then decide to invest in either prime lenses or more expensive zoom lenses that most suit your range.

Here's a screenshot of ExposurePlot (in this case, I used both the 18-55 kit lens and the 100-300 zoom lens and stored the photos in one folder, 20090620_Hobcon. This folder was read by ExposurePlot and generated the statistics):

Noticed that I used 18mm, 30mm, 60mm, and 40/100mm equally most of the time.

This is the reason why I have the following primes: 28, 50, and 135 because these are the ranges I like to shoot in although I do prefer the 35mm over the 28mm but sadly Canon's line up is at the extremes - cheap, old 35 f/2 and very expensive L 35 f/1.4. Nikon's offering is better. Hay, nag-Nikon unta na lang ko. Nevah!!!
