Default Burj Khalifa, World's New Tallest Building, Opens in Dubai

Asia has been winning the "tallest building in the world" brace for over a decade now: the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia took the crown from Chicago's Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) in 1998, and held it until the Tapei 101 in Taiwan replaced them in 2004. As of Monday, the title goes to a structure much further East, and over a thousand feet taller than the previous record-holder: the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands at a staggering 2,717 feet.

Mohammed Alabbar, the chairman of the tower's developer, Emaar Properties, showed he was aware of the irony of the tower's opening at the nadir of the city's fortunes.
"Crises come and go. And cities move on," he said. "You have to move on. Because if you stop taking decisions, you stop growing."
The city's defenders point out that even if Manhattan and Hong Kong suffered financial crises when their most celebrated buildings opened, they have not done badly since. North Korea, on the other hand, has few skyscrapers.

The tower has become symbolic of the emirate's woes: historians have pointed out that an obsession with skyscrapers is a good sign of an economic bubble. The Empire State Building was commissioned when New York's stock market was at its peak in the 1920s, and opened after the Wall Street Crash.
The passion for tall buildings moved to Hong Kong and other parts of Asia in time for the 1997 financial crisis

Abu Dhabi may be Dubai's neighbor but their relationship is more than just neighbors..
mura napud na ug kuya sa Dubai ang Abu Dhabi nya they belong to the
same union of seven emirates..pareho ragud na sila ug country, so its just rightful
and well serving nga tabangan sa abu dhabi ang dubai..garbo sa usa, garbo biya sa tanan..
and if dubai would sink to a quicksand of debt, dili maapektuhan ang abu dhabi?sobra pa sa apekto na ba...
