GEORGIA Osmeña filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) yesterday morning and asked Cebuanos to also vote for her brother Sergio “Serge” Osmeña III and cousin Emilio “Lito” Osmeña, who are both running for senator.
Lito, who served as Cebu governor from 1988 to 1992, filed his certificate of candidacy for senator at 2 p.m. yesterday at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Manila.
Four Osmeñas have now filed their COCs, while four others are expected to do so this week. Serge earlier submitted his papers, while Lito’s brother, former senator John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña also filed his COC for Cebu City mayor—the same office Georgia wants.
Still to file their COCs are Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, for the city’s south congressional seat; his wife Margot, for city councilor; nephew Richard, for reelection to the city council; and Timoteo Emilio “Timmy” Osmeña Oppus, also for the council.
The 1987 Constitution says the State shall “prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law,” in Article 2, Section 26, but Congress has failed to enact a law that provides such a definition.
The last time so many Osmeñas ran for elective office was in 1992. Lito ran for vice president and fielded his wife Annette for Cebu governor. Tomas sought reelection as Cebu City mayor, while brother Serge ran for the sixth district’s congressional seat. Sonny ran for the Senate.
Only Tomas and Sonny won that year.
Now, however, Georgia sees nothing wrong in having two Osmeñas run for the Senate, where 12 seats will be contested in May 2010.
