Tonight (if the sky is clear), starting from 6:00 PM onwards,
almost directly above you in the sky, you'll see a bright "star" beside the 1st-quarter (half) moon (8.75 days old).
That's not a star, it's the planet Jupiter 
Their angular separation is about 3 degrees. Both will set to the west-southwest at around midnight.
This is an example of an astronomical event that you can enjoy watching even without any astronomical instruments. All you need is a clear sky and your eyes.
But of course, it's a lot better if you do have a telescope
