A FORMER monk yesterday filed a criminal suit for libel against Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, two priests and his former leader in the congregation that runs a popular shrine in Simala, Sibonga.
He accused them of maligning him in “Ang Bag-ong Lungsoranon,” the newsletter of the Archdiocese of Cebu.
Venancio Cabillon, the former novice master of the Marian Monks of Eucharistic Adoration (MMEA), sued Cardinal Vidal, Fr. Marnell Mejia, Msgr. Cristobal Garcia and Abelio Mangila, also known as Frater Martin Mary, for “conspiring” in the publication of a notice that said he no longer belonged to the MMEA.
The notice warned against any solicitation of funds by Cabillon, and said he was expelled from the congregation because he violated the vows of chastity and obedience, and trafficked some of the congregation’s members.
Cabillon said it was “part of a malevolent scheme” to ruin his reputation “by unfair, baseless and unlawful means.”
