A NURSING student was accused of pocketing P126,000 cash he allegedly solicited abroad, telling donors the amount was for typhoon Ondoy’s victims and the solicitation was authorized by the GMA Kapuso Foundation.

At least three other nursing students went to the Investigation and Detective Management Bureau (IDMB) for help.
The police force plans to ask the GMA Kapuso Foundation to join the victims in filing the complaint against the student.
Sun.Star is withholding the parties’ names, after failing to contact the suspect for his comment.
Investigator PO3 Jun Tago learned that the suspect borrowed one 25-year-old nursing student’s ATM card since last June and has yet to return it.
The suspect reportedly told his classmate that he needed the card to accept remittances from his relatives abroad.
But the cardholder was surprised when a BPI Bank manager called and informed her that an organization was using the Kapuso Foundation’s name to collect donations for typhoon victims through her bank account.
The manager told her the bank did not want to be involved in any illegal activity.
Investigator Tago also identified another victim, a 21-year-old nursing student who holds a US passport and was described as the suspect’s friend.
This student said that the suspect, using her name, acquired an $800 gift card, encashed it and had the money delivered to their school in Barangay Alang-Alang, Mandaue City.
This student also learned from New York Bay Remittance that her name had been used in another financial transaction, though she had no idea what was going on.
She remembered allowing the suspect to scan and reproduce her passport. She even allowed him access to her e-mail address.
When asked why she trusted the guy, the victim said the suspect promised to bring her along when he attends a nursing convention in the United States next year. He also promised her a ticket.
When she confronted him about the shady deals, he allegedly said, in front of another classmate: “I’m sorry, this is my life, this is how I get money, and I’m sorry I put you in it.”
Another victim, a policeman’s daughter, joined the complainants when they visited the IDMB office, saying she, too, was earlier “used” by the same suspect to facilitate another transaction.
