    Default ‘Dukot’ revives Brocka genre

    From the Inquirer -

    ‘Dukot’ revives Brocka genre

—“Dukot (Desaparecidos),” a film based on true accounts of human rights violations and extra-judicial killings, brings back the political film genre, which was made popular by directors Lino Brocka (“Bayan Ko” and “Orapronobis”) and Mike de Leon (“Sister Stella L”).

The film had its world premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival in Canada, where it reportedly drew raves for its “great storytelling, thematic urgency, technical competence and tour de force performance of lead actors.” It will be shown in Australia, Japan and Hong Kong before it opens in Metro Manila on December 2.

You watched any of Lino Brocka's films before?

Well Joel Lamangan is still Joel Lamangan who made mediocre films such as Mano Po series, Desperadas, Filipinas, So...Happy Together, Happy Hearts, Zsa Zsa Zaturnah, Pacquiao: The Movie, among many, many others and he's NOT Lino Brocka.

But I don't want to be too narcissistic on our film industry. I just hope this movie turns out really good and hold up to the hype of it's “great storytelling, thematic urgency, technical competence and tour de force performance of lead actors.” And by the way, Brocka is now a genre? Hahaha

Some film enthusiasts I met view him as a "miss-or-barely hit" director. He is no Brocka but he was his protege' and I am sure he must have learned something. Arguably, his biggest flop is Pacquiao The Movie - made for P50,000,000, grossed less than P5,000,000.

As for the "Brocka genre", I think the entertainment writer (or editor) of the Inquirer went overboard with that. Brocka is best known for social commentary films and it happens that Orapronobis is politically charged (and banned).
