45nm and 65nm are the names used by companies to name the technology used to make it. in technical term, fabrication process na xa processor. the newer the processor and technology used to make it the lower the fabrication die size (size of the transistors inside the procie)... hence, 45nm is newer than 65nm... smaller number indicates the smaller die size, which means less power consumption and usually better performance.

recently intel is developing 32nm and lower fabrication process which theoretically made 6 cores in 1 die possible.
