Default Is high protein diet good for dogs?

Is high protein diet beneficial for dogs? I often heard from most dog owners and breeders that feeding high protein diet to their dogs could make them look good and healthy. Partly this statement could be true in the sense that giving high protein diets will make a pup look bigger and active. But on the other hand, giving high protein diets can also stress the kidneys of our dogs, if your dog has a history of kidney problems and other complications. According to Dr. Richards of Vetinfo4dogs.com, Feeding all meat, or nearly all meat diets to dogs almost inevitably leads to feeding an improperly balanced diet, especially in the calcium and phosphorous ratios. There is no evidence that feeding more protein than is necessary for maintenance and repair of the enzymes, muscles, etc. in the body has any benefits. It doesn't make a lot of difference to the dog's system if the protein is high quality or low quality as long as it does meet those needs. Although, It is necessary to feed higher quantities of poorer quality proteins, though. This is bad for dogs who already have kidney failure because it increases the amount of protein products the damaged kidneys have to deal with. It seems logical that it might help the kidneys to feed lower amounts of higher quality protein throughout life but there really isn't much evidence to support a beneficial effect except in dogs who actually have kidney insufficiency.

Well the question would be how much protein should be in our dogs diet? What % is enough?

The AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials) standards call for a minimum of 22% protein for a growing dog and 18% for an adult dog for foods using the most common ingredients. Most dog foods tend to contain higher protein levels than these minimums. Dogs can actually do well with much lower protein levels if the protein is of high quality.

So if you want to keep your dog healthy, it is important to feed them a well balanced diet. Select a good quality of dog food. Research, research, research for dog food ingredients in the market today and help your dogs live longer.

Is Too Much Protein Harmful? Facts about the Importance of High Quality Protein

"...Protein is processed in the liver and any waste materials are filtered and excreted by the kidneys. High quality protein does not generate large amounts of waste that needs to be removed from the body, but poor quality protein which is difficult to digest does and thus puts stress on the kidneys..."

"... Protein in dog food can come from either plant or meat sources. Logically, plant sources are cheaper, especially considering that corn gluten meal, the most popular, cheap protein booster, is a byproduct of the human food processing industry, left over from making corn starch and corn syrup. It has a crude protein content of 60%, so theoretically even if your food recipe contained no other protein sources at all, you could make a food with a 20% crude protein content by mixing it 1:2 with some cheap carb source...."

"... It is critical to stress that the term "crude protein" is used in the guaranteed analysis, which means there is no statement whatsoever as to its digestibility. Protein comes in many forms, even shoe leather, chicken feathers or cow hooves have a fairly high crude protein content, but the body is only able to extract and process very little of it, at the price of a lot of work and stress to do so...."

so its not the amount of protein really is harmful per se.. but the "kind" of protein found in our dog foods, that is.

True kaayo ni sir. Daghan kaayu dog food that's out of the market today claiming high protein content but the question is where does this protein content derived from? Sayup kaayu ni nga notion na because taas og protein ang dog food means maayu na ang imong dog food nga imong gigamit. It boils down to the ingredients used in the dog food. Kay naa man mga premium dog foods nga dili gani kaayu ka taas og protein but has a balanced food content in it and is using human grade materials in the ingredients list.
