The management of Star Cinema has issued a statement asking for “fair computation, sharing scheme and partnership” from the people behind SM Cinema, with whom they have had a falling out that resulted in the non-showing of its latest offering, “And I Love You So,” in its theaters.
The statement was signed by Star Cinema’s managing director, Malou N. Santos, and furnished on Aug. 18 to Manila Bulletin Online.
The statement also confirmed earlier reports that Star Cinema has “a collection and computation issue with SM for the past few years,” adding that “to date, [the issue] has unfortunately remained unresolved.”
Star Cinema did not elaborate on the issue but a source had earlier told Manila Bulletin Online that it allegedly stemmed from “an erroneous computation of box-office income” and that proceeds from Star Cinema’s movies weren’t being reported “properly” by SM Cinema management, prompting the film outfit to ask for a “re-computation.”
The issue between the two parties became public when “And I Love You So” was not shown in any SM Cinema theater when it opened on Aug. 12.
The chain of movie theaters later issued a statement saying that the incident was “unfortunate.”
“In Star Cinema, we always aim for a win-win situation that will benefit both our partners and us,” concluded the statement that was read on the Aug. 17 episode of “Showbiz News Ngayon.”
“And I Love you So” stars Bea Alonzo, Sam Milby and Derek Ramsay, and directed by Laurenti Dyogi. It reportedly earned P3.4 million on its opening day.
