Getting a Laptop? Think Again

im a compsci student and ever since i was i started college, all i dreamed about was to own a laptop. bring it anywhere with me, work while in vacation and etc...

2 years ago, i sold my rig to get a new laptop for 120k. it was the best in its class it even had wifi eventhough i dont know where to use it. it had wide screen and jbl speakers which is still working very well and still better than the average laptops today. i brought it with me for a couple of months until i realize that it is too heavy for just a few minutes of use. more practical to go to the internet cafe. worse, the laptops brought by people in the hotel lobby and coffee shops were smaller.

2 weeks ago, just here in cebu, a series of thunderstorm.. lightning was so angry.. felt like its going to hit me. later on, it hit my poor ol' laptop!! god dammit! son of a... guess what happened??

1) usb contoller wont work anymore
2) audio wont work
3) wifi wont work
4) bluetooth wont work

now usually if you own a desktop, you can simply replace each of these items easily without breaking your piggy bank.
when diagnosed, my laptop only had one problem ... "the Systemboard" aka motherboard so i said to myself "thank god"

when i got the quotation over fax, i said to myself "god dammit?? 32,500?? just the board"

(i swear i will never own a laptop again.)

its difficult to find motherboards for 2 year old laptops.

so i think its really time to get a new one which are more efficient in terms of power consumption.

and always once you heare thunderstorms

disconnect the laptop from the phoneline or dsl line

Sorry for your loss but lets make on thing clear, dli ni about not buying a laptop but things happend during a thunderstorm... any electrical device can be busted basta mag thunderstom nya ma igo sa power surge...

i agree with you guys. my laptop had been working fairly the same since it was bought until now. unfortunately for whatever mishap that might cause a laptop be it lightning strike or you spilled something on it, still the thought is, laptops are disposable. if you damage something better get a new one.

laptops have their own advantages and unfortunately the disadvantage cost me money

This is why I always get the 3yr warranty option when buying a 'premium' laptop. This happened to me also on my old Toshiba Tecra notebook. It was on it's 2nd year when a huge lightning struck.... and pretty much fried the motherboard.

So I took it to a Toshiba servicing agent, didn't tell them bout the lightning incident and pretty much just told them that it no longer powers up. They replaced the motherboard under warranty. Sweet ass...

That is why it does not make sense to spend 100K plus on a laptop and not buy a surge protector. My 45k laptop has one so I leave it on all the time without fear.
