    the simplest and basic way to make a home network is using a DHCP server.
    assign all host to your desired workgroup name eg... ( mynetwork ) needs restart win xp
    rename each host to eg... ( pc1, pc2, pc3, pc4, pc5 ) needs restart win xp
    set TCP/IP to obtain ip automatically ( the router will automatically give an ip address to each host )
    if you have enough knowledge you can set each host ip address manually with

    IP ADDRESS = HOST
    SUBNET = ROUTER
    GATEWAY = ROUTER
    PRIMARY DNS = this will be given by your ISP
    SECONDARY DNS = this will be given by your ISP

    about crimping...
    i think there are lots of type of crimping
    from CAT3 - CAT6
    most common in a home network with a switch or router
    is what they called straight through crimping...
    color code is
    straight through color code from left to right =
    stripe orange | orange | stripe green | blue | stripe blue | green | stripe brown | brown

    OPPS i think CAT3-CAT6 is not a type of crimping ITS a category of UTP Cable....

    Make sure wire 1 (WO), wire 2 (O), wire 3 (WG), and wire 6 (G) are crimped properly.
