New world record: Sharon gobbles up 50 siopaos in 1 minute
Sharon Cuneta is no longer just the Megastar. She is now the undisputed Siopao Queen.
The Megastar recently beat the world record of most siopao buns (steamed meat buns) eaten within the span of one minute for a special edition of her Sunday prime time
talk show “Sharon.”
In the episode with the theme “Pinoy Pride,” airing Sunday, Cuneta showcased outstanding Filipino talents including bowling legend Paeng Nepomuceno, billiard champion Efren “Bata” Reyes, and boxing hero Manny Pacquiao.
At the end of the pre-taped show, Cuneta, who has often joked about her weight and hearty appetite, surprised the audience by announcing her intention to beat the world record of most ’siopao’ buns eaten in 60 seconds.
“Mga kaibigan, hindi lamang po sina Paeng, Bata at, syempre po si Manny, ang may espesyal na talent. Alam nyo po ba, ako rin may special talent?” she told the crowd.
“Gusto nyo po bang malaman kung ano ang special talent ko?” she asked. The audience responded with a resounding “Oo (yes)!”
Then with a wave of her hand, a table full of siopao was wheeled into the stage. “Eto po ang talent ko (my friends this is my talent),” she said, giggling. “Susubukan ko pong matalo ang record ng pinakamaraming siopao na makakain sa loob ng isang minuto.”
A
representative from Guinness Book of World Records was on hand to witness and verify the record attempt. The world record had been held by a Beijing man, Li Chun, who managed to eat 35 siopao buns in 60 seconds in 2007.
The audience gasped in shock as they saw a side of Cuneta they had not seen before. The Megastar started stuffing her mouth with the buns one after the other and swallowing them in one gulp.
“My gosh! Ang galing ni Mega! Parang popcorn lang sa kanya yung siopao!” an audience member gasped.
By the time the stopwatch struck the minute mark, Cuneta had just wolfed down her 50th bun, earning her a standing ovation from the crowd.
“I’m so proud of my mom,” said Cuneta’s son,
KC Concepcion, who was watching the show from backstage with his stepfather, Sen. Francis Pangilinan.
Pangilinan said: “At first I thought she was crazy to even try it, but knowing Sharon, I never had any doubt that she could do it if she set her mind to it. She really deserves to be Siopao Queen.”
