just sharing..
every linux distro comes with common apps already. office, multimedia apps etc etc
i would like to stick with the most popular distro, namely, Ubuntu. i use it a home since its free and robust..
when you install the base system. you will notice how ugly fonts look, and when to try to open an mp3, it wont play, and then when you try to go to youtube, you won't see any videos..
we need to install some important apps/additions to it. I think you will need them if you are planning to use linux as your primary Os. the "Add/Remove application" is your friend
for mp3, youtube, codecs you need the install the "ubuntu restricted extras"
for fonts you need "ms core fonts", yes, fonts came from microsoft.
and how about Yahoo messenger? there is no native linuux yahoo messenger, there was. look for "Gyachi" in google.. Pidgin is good but Gyachi is better for Yahoo.
for video rippers. install "Handbrake".
for multitrack audio recording. "Audacity", i have a Zoom G2 -usb interface works great.
for Photobooth mac-envy. install "Cheese"
for movie watching. is "VLC" good for you?
for running windows apps. "Wine"
for the musician. "Ardour GTK"
for photo organization. "Google Picasa"
for the vista envy. "Google Gadgets"
for P2P "Limewire"
for virtualization "Sun VirtualBox"
video editing - "AviDemux"
for skyping - "Skype" siguro
for hardware geeks - "lm_sensors", "gkrellm"
watching TV - "tvtime"
and much much more.. these are pretty much an average/intermediate user would need..
my dualcore 3.33Ghz run happily with ubuntu 9.04 ext4, it's zippy and rock solid stable. no virus headaches. peace
Additional useful apps:
"WinFF" - convert videos to common formats vice versa.
"PeaZip" - compression/archiving tool, gives you more compression options
"Inkscape" - CorelDraw alternative
