    the thread title is wrong

    router and switch should be together. they have its own different function. the two should be together in a network infrastructure

    router with a built in switch.
    if you already have a router, then just get a switch.
    you only need a router to connect to another network.

    if you want to share 1 internet connection to multiple computers..use a router(basically what it's made for). if your modem is a modem/router, then you can use a switch.. since you already have a router.

    switch doesnt have a NAT-network address translation-which made the router its routing capabilities.

    doesnt really make a difference in stability, sharing internet to 10 computers. you really need a router.

    ISP's modem/router ----> router w/ 4ports ------> 16port switch -----> 10 PCs

    your internet connection speed depends on your ISP plan and how many users are using the internet simultaneously. has nothing to do with your LAN setup (assuming you that correctly).

    the first setup is cheaper but no wireless connectivity, basic setup to get connected to the net.
    the second setup adds extra cost, but you'll get extra features like Port Forwarding, QoS, Security, Wireless, SPI Firewall, etc.

    your existing modem/router should have NAT/PAT/DHCP feature to allow the client PCs to connect to the net.

    not really sure if your modem is a modem router... what's the brand and model number?

    what IP's do you have? if you got a class c ip address..(ie. 192.168.x.x) then your modem
    is already a modem/router device..

    as per my experience as a former Linksys Tech Support.. you can cascade upto 3 routers without a
    noticeable drop in speed.. i've tried that too.. my edimax dual wan router(br6524k)---wrt54g(running ddwrt)---wrt54gl---computers... didnt get a drop in speed..
