here's an article i have to share about screw drivers...

Screwdrivers are named by the type of tip they have. The two most common tips are straight-edged (or regular) and Phillips (or crossed). Straight-edged screwdrivers come in two forms. One type has a slightly flared tip to better fit into the straight dip in a screw. There is a type of straight-tip screwdriver that does not have a flared tip, called a cabinet tip screwdriver. You are most likely going to need the latter when assembling things like the furniture projects. The screws used in these projects often are sunk in and you need a tip that will reach inside a hole to tighten the screw.
Cross-slotted screwdrivers also come in two varieties, Phillip’s head and Frearson. The difference between the two is that the Phillip’s cross-slotted screwdriver has four “u”-shaped dips in the tip and the Frearson has four “v”-shaped dips. These are both used for screws that have an “x” on their head. Cross-slotted screws are the ones you will run into most frequently.
One of the first things you want to do is make sure you are using a screwdriver that fits the screw you are working with. If the screwdriver tip is too large or too small, it will either not work at all or may strip the threads on the screw. In either case, it isn’t going to work. There are two methods of finding the correct size of screwdriver to use.
First, you can take the screws you are using to the store with you and try various types of screwdrivers to see if they fit. This isn’t always practical, however. On packages of screws, you will find a number that will indicate what size of screw this is. These numbers are most often single digits from zero to twenty-four and then ¼ or ½ inch. Screwdrivers will indicate what size screws they are meant to fit.
Straight-edged screwdrivers are available for every size of screw. This is because you will want to make sure the tip fits snugly in the screw slot. Cross-slotted screwdrivers come in sizes from zero to four, making them useful on several sizes of screw each. These will also indicate on the package what size of screws they fit.
