The thread was posted sa Software & Games section of iStorya, thereby ang atong assumption is that it's talking about the computer version of D&D and AD&D.
And "old school" (i.e. non-computer AD&D/D&D) is NOT a board game. It's a stat-sheet, pen and paper based RPG.
From wikipedia:
Players of D&D create characters that embark upon imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting. A Dungeon Master (abbreviated as DM, also known as a Game Master or GM) serves as the game's referee and storyteller, while also maintaining the setting in which the adventures occur. During each game session, the players listen to descriptions of their character's surroundings, as well as additional information and potential choices from the DM, then describe their actions in response. The characters form a party that interacts with the setting's inhabitants (and each other). Together they solve dilemmas, engage in battles and gather treasure and knowledge. In the process the characters earn experience points to become increasingly powerful over a series of sessions. D&D departs from traditional wargaming and assigns each player a specific character to play instead of a military formation. Miniature figures or markers, placed on a grid, are sometimes used to represent these characters.
Take note I stressed on the word "SOMETIMES", because you can play D&D without a board, and using purely your imagination to resolve a situation.
From my recollection of our D&D games back in college (1988, Kalayaan Residence Hall, UP Diliman), wala mi naggamit ug board kay most of our games were open field, it's only inside dungeons when you need specific measurements or order sa pag distribute sa characters in the situation.
This is an example of one of the modules we played...
...our DM usually modified the storyline heavily, para lingaw ang tanan nga gadula, because not all of our friends were into D&D, so pag lisod kaayo ang quest, mohawa man gud ang uban hehehe, so the DM usually modified the module to insert a lot of booty (i.e. XP's, gold, powerful weapons and magic items) into the quest, para ganahan ang tanang people nga mo-apil.
Take note DILI NI COMPUTER-BASED...purely imagination lang.

Good day.
Hey, pobre (or anyone else really), I would like to invite you again to join our monthly (at least) tabletop role-playing game.
We however play the Savage Worlds Explorer's Edition system, not Dungeons & Dragons, because it is more gratifying, faster, simpler, and much more. But it is still of the same category as Dungeons & Dragons in that there's the game master, players, rules, dice, paper (that includes the battle grid and tokens, of course), pencil (or pen), and fun around the table.
I have three players at the moment: one plays an elf ranger, another a human warrior, and the last one a human mage. We have just finished playing the last two adventures of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Oriental Adventures---Swords of the Daimyo converted to the Savage Worlds system. We are about to begin Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Oriental Adventures---Night of the Seven Swords also converted to Savage Worlds.
My player's characters actually come from the West and ended up in the East for various reasons. They like the idea of questing in some really distant foreign land. By West and East I mean, of course, the counterparts in our fictional game world of the real world's medieval West and East.
Thank you.
Really? That's great to hear! Tell me your cellular phone number (if you have a telephone number, so much the better) in an e-mail to tabletopsavages@gmail.com so we could make contact.
If anyone is interested, I am running a play-by-forum-post tabletop role-playing game at Play-by-Forum-Post Fantasy Tabletop Roleplaying Game Adventure - Flyff Power Board that is based on Savage Worlds Explorer's Edition and Advanced Dungeons & Savages.
It's basically tabletop using an online dice roller program.
Thank you.
