MANILA - Twenty-four Filipino nurses who went to the United Kingdom to take advance nursing courses were arrested after police found out that the school where they were supposed to study did not offer such courses, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said on Thursday.
Their arrest prompted POEA administrator Jennifer Manalili to issue a warning against recruitment agencies offering study-and-work visas to Britain as they may turn out to be a racket.
Manalili said UK police raided the London School of Health and Management Studies and discovered that it failed to open the promised courses for the Filipino nurses.
The 34 Filipino nurses will be deported, she said.
Manalili said the arrested Filipino nurses were promised to work and study at the same time after paying their recruiters £3,500 for tuition and student visa fees.
They were also charged an additional £150 for transportation expenses upon arrival in the United Kingdom, Manalili added.
“The illegal recruiters promised them they would study and at the same time work in nursing homes for 20 hours as part of their curriculum,” Manalili said.
POEA records show that about 500 Filipino nurses board passers and non-board passers who have left for the United Kingdom to study and work since 2007. There had been no reports about them.
Manalili advised Filipinos who want to work overseas to check with the POEA if the job offers are legitimate.
Labor figures said close to 15,000 Filipino nurses leave the Philippines yearly to work abroad. The Middle East remains to be the top destination of Filipino nurses. - SG
