Easy win for Asian boys' doubles duo
Asian pairing
Francis Casey Alcantara of the Philippines and Cheng-Peng Hsieh of Chinese Taipei have triumphed in the boys’ doubles final of Australian Open 2009, defeating unseeded combination Mikhal Biryukov of Russia and
Yasutaka Uchiyama of Japan 6-4 6-2.
The seventh seeds were in dominant form at Margaret Court Arena, winning 87 per cent of first serve points throughout the 43-minute encounter.
Biryukov and Uchiyama had defeated the top-seeded pairing of Yuki Bhambri and Liang-Chi Huang in their previous match, but were not able to replicate that form today, quickly going down a set and 5-1 after being broken twice in the second set.
They managed to hold serve to slightly prolong proceedings before Alcantara and Hsieh held their own to claim the title.
It is Hsieh’s third junior Grand Slam doubles title, with the Chinese Taipei player victorious at both Melbourne Park and Wimbledon last year.
He said the result was very pleasing given he had only been playing with Alcantara since the beginning of 2009.
“It is the second time I have won here at the Australian Open, and I’m very happy [to defend my title],” he said.
For Alcantara, the result erased some of the disappointment of his first round loss in the boys’ singles draw, where he was the No. 10 seed.
