MELBOURNE, Australia - A 4-year-old girl was near death after her father allegedly threw her 190 feet (58 meters) from a bridge into a river in Australia's second largest city on Thursday, police said.
Water police used a boat to rescue the girl around 10 minutes after witnesses reported seeing her thrown from near the top of the busy West Gate Bridge in Melbourne, Police Detective Inspector Steve Clark told reporters.
"A male in that vehicle has taken a young girl ... and dropped (her) over the bridge and she's landed in the water," Clark said.
Clark said the girl's two older siblings, aged 6 and 8, were left in an SUV on the bridge while their 35-year-old father allegedly threw her.
The girl was flown by helicopter to a Melbourne hospital in a "critical condition," he said.
About an hour later, the "distressed" father was arrested outside a Melbourne court where he was standing with his other two children, Clark said. The father had appeared in that court Wednesday, Clark said, without elaborating on the detail of the case.
But Clark said there had been a dispute between the father and the children's mother in the family court. He said the mother had been informed, but did not give details.
Police were questioning the father, a Melbourne resident. Homicide detectives are investigating in case the girl dies. Murder carries a maximum life sentence in Australia.
