Default Opteron 165 (dual core) vs. x2 3800+

    -both dual core
    -opteron has 1.8GHz speed, and 1024mb x 2 L2 cache
    -x2 3800+ has 2.0GHz speed, but only 512mb x 2 L2 cache
-both are highly overclockable, up to around 2.6GHz, although they say that the Opteron can take it better
-the opteron is about $35 more expensive
-I have never overclocked in my life, but i am willing to try, as they say it's a sin to not OC

So, what should i choose? will the bigger L2 cache have a great impact on my computing life, or will it only help for F.E.A.R.? is it worth the extra $$? waaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh

    For >> Me <<

Id get the Opteron 165 since Opterons undergo a stresstesting far more than any FX series, so which means it is assured mo stability on its stock speed. And from what ive been reading around the net Opterons generally overclock a very well and that 200Mhz diff is pretty small i bet you can reach that with just a few bumps on the FSB.
Regarding the Cache, Bigger is always better but not the best since AMD processors are not as Cache dependent as its competior.

Whats ur planned motherboard btw if you dont mind me asking that.

both are about the same price, the 165 gets even cheaper if you know where to buy. 1mb cache same price so 165 would be my choice

Get the opty bro... the extra L2 cache(1mb) will boost the performance vs. X2 3800's 512kb. It's highly overclockable too, I read somewhere that Opterons are made of the finest silicon die compare that of the Athlons.

nope they are made on the equal quality of silicon wafer but Opterons under go a lot more burn-in and stresstesting than Athlons and FX

Yes Opterons are tested under far more srtingent demands than the X2, and are generally better quality silicon than the Athlons.

"The Opteron is tested more intensely than the Athlon because the Opteron is intended to undergo a more intensive workload, therefore stability is a key concern in the production of the Opteron. This generally translates into "better" quality silicon on the Opteron which should in theory yield higher overclocks than an average Athlon. It is also speculated that the more intense testing leads to better memory controllers which will lead to better overclocking results and latencies on not only your processor, but your memory as well."

hahaha, wow, it seems that the decision is unanimous....

I guess they don't call it OPTEROWN for nothing eh...?

all your feedback have been most helpful guys, thanks so much...
