From what I've seen, it seems like the creator/writer of this show were big fans of Ally McBeal. They pretty much created a male version of her character and called him Eli Stone.
Also, what's up with the whole George Micheal dream scene thing? Is this their own version of the dancing baby? Kinda odd.
