If you are planning on using AJAX just be aware of the issues that comes with it, used well and on appropriate situations AJAX can really help a user experience and reduce bandwidth / resources. There are plenty of JS frameorks that support AJAX (as well as a bunch of other nifty functions), the biggest of which are Dojo and Prototype, and a lot of them are pretty mature and is being used on a lot of production level sites.

Issues include the loss of the 'Back' button, people who turn off JS will not be able to use it, not being able to bookmark, and the fact that too much JS will slow down your browser. There are ways of dealing with these problems of course. Check out www.ajaxian.com , there's plenty of resources (and neato Ajaxified sites / pages) in there.
