just search the forums for topics like this, its been discussed like 234958729345 times already.

to cut it short really depends on what you need it for, Intel is faster on specific applications thats been solely written for it. while AMD known for its raw processor power. its a known fact the as of now AMD does outpace Intel even on those programs designed for Intel Chipsets. basically if you still dont know which processor you want it really comes down to personal preference and use of the computer

    i agree with EarlZ...

Without including technology thats not available in the market yet (conroe, am2, etc.), if you're just going with the fastest CPU (at stock speed) AMD definitely performs better in almost all applications. Aside from AMDs solid performance the architecture/technology they're currently using in their CPUs and chipsets are also ahead than that of Intels. Aside from being first to implement 64bit (and doing better at that compared to Intels EMT64), HyperTranspot interconnect proves to be very effective over the old FSB implementation too. Other technologies such as: the on-chip integration of the memory controller, the ability of the Opteron processor to scale to multi-processing configurations, the adoption of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) fabrication technology are just a few of the contributing factors that adds strength to AMDs CPUs. On the other hand, Intel is still stuck with aging technology (Netburst, etc.) which seems to have reached its limits. That is why Intels current CPUs are plagued with problems such as heat and high electricity consumption. And while Intel CPUs make use of DDR2 RAMs and significantly higher clock speeds, AMD still manages to outperform them.

But as we all know, the fastest CPU available right now from both teams are very expensive thus having a very small share in the total CPU market. What makes it into the hands of the more significant number of people are not even the mid-range ones because the largest percentage of PC sales are that of businesses, offices, corporations... and taking into account their usage of these PCs their more likely to pick budget setups. And this is where things get kinda interesting because there is no clear winner in the budget to mid-range segments because it all depends on how much you're willing to spend on the unit. This means that depending on your budget, it is possible that one of the offering from either team can do better.

So while most of AMDs CPUs has a very good price-performance ratio, some of Intels CPUs has some fight left in them still. Thats why most people would tell you it all depends on how you plan to use your PC and how much your budget is. Once you've identified these, i know people here are more than eager to give you a good "bang-for-your-buck" setup.

If you wanna see benchmarks and compare CPUs from both AMD and Intel head to head you can go here:

Want more info on what i meant about the technology the CPUs are using... you can read this:
(Conroes technology is also discussed here.)

By the way, CPU IS the processor! It stands for Central Processing Unit, its not the box that contains all the PC components. Somehow people confuse the CPU with the system box... in the same way they say Kodak instead of Camera or Xerox instead of photocopy or Colgate instead of toothpaste...well, you get the picture hehe
