The Dark Knight" is still on the tip of everyone's tongue. But now, instead of folks breathlessly asking each other if they've seen it, talk has turned to speculation over Batman's next foe. Who's it gonna be?

iVillage is reporting that the Caped Crusader may take on the Riddler in "Batman 3." According to the rumor mill, Johnny Depp might sign on to play the nefarious super-criminal. But caveat emptor—this could be just as false as the one about Crispin Glover playing the Joker.

Slashfilm notes that there are additional possibilities floating around. For instance, Phillip Seymour Hoffman may play the Penguin or Angelina Jolie could don Catwoman's skin-tight suit. Truth or fiction, fanboys around the world must be having a heart attack at the mere possibility.

Still, the "official" rumor mill is just one of the ways superfans are checking in on the next Batman flick. Many seek the scoop themselves. We've noticed impressive searches on "batman 3 rumors," "dark knight sequel casting rumors," and "batman's next villain."

That last query is very telling. People clearly want to know the answer, but we doubt even the filmmakers have decided. To that end, may we offer the studio execs this humble piece of Search-informed advice: Go with Catwoman. She's far-and-away the most popular baddie and there are already a slew of searches on possible cast members including Jessica Biel, Amy Adams, and, wait for it, Maggie Gyllenhaal. Do fans think Rachel Dawes, Bruce Wayne's one-and-only, was really the Catwoman all along?

Rumors are rumors. If I'm a producer, I won't be careless enough to cast Maggie Gyllenhaal as the "Catwoman" for no reason. They can change the plot to make it more interesting. How about Rachel Dawes didn't die after all and tried to seek revenge after knowing what happened to Harvey Dent? Or maybe a cat brought her back to life?

Johnny Depp is very fit to take either the "Joker" or "Riddler" role. A little of Jack Sparrow's character will definitely spice up Batman even more.

If I ran Warner Brothers, I would make the third Batman movie really big, and by big, I mean pulling out the big guns and just go ahead and make the greatest superhero film ever. Now, both Batman Begins and Dark Knight owe a great deal to the comics writing of Jeph Loeb, whose Long Halloween inspired many plot points used in Nolan's scripts. Loeb also wrote one of the best Superman/Batman team-up stories ever(Superman/Batman: PUblic Enemies) and I'm suggesting that the third Batman film should be based on Loeb's great story and it can also be a "sequel" to the truly disappointing "Superman Returns."

The premise is really simple: U.S. President Lex Luthor offers a $1 billion bounty for the capture of Superman, which encourages both supervillains and superheroes to attack him, and only Batman can help him. In that way, they get to make a really badass Superman story, that is also a very kick as Batman story.

If there is one thing that summer gave to fall in 2008, it was the gift of casting rumors. The late-July release of The Dark Knight and its subsequent historic box office run has paved the way to what can only be described as a avalanche of speculation that has rained down upon the internet, and has been greeted by thunderous outcries from fanboy and fangirl alike.

And while we’ve seen just about everything we thought we’d never see — from Cher as Catwoman to Milo Ventamiglia as Robin — the folks at Warner Bros. continue to remind us that Christopher Nolan hasn’t even decided to do another movie, let alone choose cast for one. But as always, that could change on a dime — especially if loose-lipped executives continue to chat with the equally loose-lipped Michael Caine. Caine told MTV News that he’s had conversations with higher-ups about the next film, and that they’ve already got some plans laid out:

“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make another one?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘S–t, they’ve done it again!’” [Laughs]

Johnny DeppAs the article over at MTV points out, the rumors around Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman have been hot topics around the next Batman film for some time, emerging not too long after The Dark Knight was released. So far, these are the only casting rumors that have endured to the point of having a principal cast member talk about them — as Caine just did.

That said, it wouldn’t be prudent for fans to get their hopes up too much, as no official word has come down the pipe that the movie is even happening. And no matter how illogical it would be for WB or Chris Nolan to pass on the opportunity to continue the series, we can’t rule that out as a possibility. Having said that, the prospect of adding talent like Depp and Hoffman to a franchise that is already at the top of its game would be a great move, no matter the direction they choose to take with the characters. In a franchise that has been built on putting great talent in places where we may not have expected to see them, these two seem to be very plausible moves — that is, if they turn out to be true.
