Default Essential lens for a DSLR noob

Well basically my first love is Macro, which Ive painstakingly tried to impossibly master on a point and shoot hehehe. Well I know Master Beor is good at this, taking pics of eyeballs of puny little creatures

But For practicalities sake, Im not going to start there kay mahal kaayo and limited ra. Sine We bought this cam basically for our upcoming kid, im getting a 50mm f1.8. Pero limited raman sad gud cya for portraits. So, unsa kaha man next all around lense? And whats a good wide lense for structural pics and last na, ang macro lense

    For canon please.
    Thanks!

then get a macro lens instead of the 50 1.8
if i were you i wouldnt wast my 4k on the 50
also for baby and todler portraits id rather get a longer lens (85mm to 135mm)
100mm 2.8 macro would serve you both ways very well...
however prime lenses may be more tricky for newbies (some obstacles you need to master) than zoom lens so consider that too.
consider 24-105IS L4 as a very good all around lens

good luck to the upcoming baby

You can also get an extension tube set Ryan that you can stack together with your 50mm to allow you to shoot macro.

    24-105 f4l is also a great lens.

    24-70 2.8 is also a great lens.
i also have this however i prefer using the 24-105 for ryans purpose.
the IS helps in low light indoor scene more than the 2.8 can for slower shutter shoots.
also the 105 extra range will play a big role in getting the shots like mommy playing with the baby and daddy further away not distracting the two (candid moments)

besides at an angle, 2.8 dof would be impractical in getting a decent focused image for 10R or larger baby prints unless you stop them down if its not posed, seldom do you shoot babies head on straight.

btw, newer cameras from canon like ryans 450D offer better focusing with f4 lenses unlike older cameras were only 2.8 lenses get the cameras advantages. and knowing ryan, saving a little weight on the f4 would be much appreciated. the 2.8 is just that much more heavier!

i experience better and more accurate focusing in very low light with the 24-105+5D(or even 40D) compared to 24-70+10D(or film cameras)

another up for the 24-105. i've used it before and it is probably one of the best walkaround lenses for canon. most people i know usually go through this trend: kit>50mm1.8f>28-135>then usually 70-200 2.8 or 4f (for zoom fanatics) and/or 24-70 or 24-105. skip a few pages, go straight for the L. of course, money is the limiting factor. there are a lot of relatively okay sigma lenses that have good range, pero layo ra gyud cya kontra canon L in terms of image quality. for macro, i think the 85mm 1.8/f is a very good lens for this purpose, considering its price (there are lenses specifically designed for macro, but i'll stick with the 85 1.8f).

but as what most seasoned photographers will tell you, it is always the person behind the camera that makes the biggest difference. we learned this lesson in rocky 4 (dolph lundgren vs. rocky balboa/brawn vs. heart)... lol
