^topic. I need backgrounds for this.
depends. for young men, they would say linux. for mature men, they would say BSD.
What type of server are you planning to build?
Diri ra man sa amo, duha ra kabuok computer oi. Hehe. Then ganahan ko ang usa ka computer nako kay ako i-server para experience lang. Hmm, I prefer Linux lang usa kay wala pa kaayo ko idea about BSD. So do you have any suggestions?
right now, im testing the latest ubuntu server for my database since LTS and mao rman kaya sa specs sa ako hardware. if i compare nko sa fedora mas user-friendly ni and on my part, i prefer stability than any other other.

Before that, unsaon pag-set up ug server. Pareha ra ni sa Windows Server?
@technowar
I suggest you go over the installation guide of your preferred distro
if distro imng gipangita..
(if you mean distro you mean linux dba?) just use plain old linux kernel without any distro or UI.
Download the kernel and install..
Distro with UI can help you configure and manipulate easily BUT as a server it will take some overhead during processing, some millesecond of overhead is important specially kng server ka..
Learn the basic of networking before even trying to install a server.Before that, unsaon pag-set up ug server. Pareha ra ni sa Windows Server?
halu,
SME Server (CentOS based) SME Server Inc. - Home
this is a very nice distribution tungod sa documentation ug community support.
if ganahan lang ka ug Network-Attached Storage use FreeNAS FreeNAS: The Free NAS Server - Home
BSD-based pero nindot ang performance.
visit DistroWatch for more Linux & BSD distributions DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.
para sa imo need try ubuntu 8.04 server first. you'll be up and running in no time.
gamay ra pud disk space requirement kay wala man gui. package management using apt is also
very simple. installing/uninstalling packaged apps is usually a single command line.
@cebugdev
murag dili to para sa mga faint of heart imo suggestion bro
dako kaau trabaho setting up a linux system without a distro (Welcome to Linux From Scratch!).
building the the kernel alone does not make a linux system or at least not something very useful.
pwede ra ba na nga ang ubuntu 8.04 server ako gamiton nya mu act siya both as web server and database server on one computer. . ?
