    Default Multi-rail .vs. Single-rail

maybe this good give as a good grip about multi-rail PSU's

there is so much hype now about multi-rail vs single rail psu. in many psu's i have opened, all 12v rails lead to one or two diode bridges and a single transformer offering at best overcurrent protection...nothing special and no magic there.for me...one rail or two is ok with me...

    single rail or multirail

as long as they deliver that specification in terms of amperes...........

i wish we could tell which among the cables is using which 12v rail for multi-rail PSUs..

i think the manual will show it... of course only the branded ones like cooler master, antec, silverstone will show which rail goes to which adapter...

the problem is branded one's are not cheap, some cost more than your proc or mobo for that matter. wish there were middle class branded PSU's sold @ cheap, affordable price.

    I have tried generic psu

but i will always make sure i don't go over 50% of its rated power...

lets say if the generic psu is rated at 500w.... i will load it upto 250-300w..... if I go higher it will surely fail

actually, the link I gave would definitely explain why single rail is much efficient than multi-rail..

check first your PSU label if it has multi-rail if it indicates, 12v1 12v2 12v3 12v4 and their ampere values respectively.

Having a multi-rail in a PSU but don't use up most of the allotted amperes in each rail is in-efficient..

let's say you have an 18amp @ 12v1.. .yet you only used up 3amps.. then, the 15amps left is unused..

unless if you have single rail @ 36amps, and you used at least 20amps - 30amps, since all of your devices are connected to one voltage rail, then you'll have efficiency in your PSU.

that's what I've understood from other forums online..

just correct me if I'm wrong..

I think there are new Multirail PSUs that divide the amps very efficiently

like the toughpower and coolermaster real power... so in effect they can compete very well with single rail PSU
