do you like "school of -insert art here-" shows? if so, then you'd probably enjoy Soul Eater.
notice that I said probably.
Soul Eater is a story about three friends, harry, ron and hermio... no, i meant Black*Star, Death the Kid and Maka.
So what do our heroes actually do in the show? They study in the Hogwarts sch... er, a shinigami school. You got it, a school for death gods. They apparently collect souls of some really bad dudes in order to turn their human weapons into something Shinigami-sama would want to use.
Death the Kid is the dual gun-wielding son of shinigami-sama who suffers from OCD, Maka is the Faux action girl with a really bad voice actress and Black*Star, as ANN puts it, is Uzumaki Naruto.
The first episode really caught my attention. fluid action scenes and a cool art style had me interested. the same was true with the preceding two episodes. turns out that those three episodes made up the prologue of the story. and sad to say, those were the best episodes so far.
Six episodes and still not much story progression. not much developments. the action dropped to less than half of what the first three had. Soul eater slowly deteriorating from being a cool anime with cool fight scenes into just another shonen anime.
what I don't like about shonen anime is their need to explain every single detail about their moves or techniques like the fate of the universe depended upon it. they try to create their own set of rules about different techniques, and often fail miserably, making the anime look ridiculous in the end.
if there's one thing gurren lagann taught me, it's that viewers won't care how the technique works or how the hell it did this or that as long as it looks cool. although there are instances where a technique with full specs can be interesting (like in YuYu Hakusho's Sensui arc) most of the time it's just plain annoying. when dudes could have been using screentime to beat each other up, they discuss techniques instead.
what, are they gonna discuss the enemy to death?
So all in all, while Soul Eater has a lot of the usual Shonen flaws, it's still better than most of the overrated crap *ubonarutobleachubo* out there. Here's hoping the next episodes will get better.
