How to become Independent Payment Gateway?

I am helpind a friend on his business. He would like to have a credit card payments for his site, because as of now, he accepts payment thru western union etc.

Now, how to become an Independent Payment Gateway? para sa iyang site, makadawat siya ug credit card info then be able to validate it.

What are the requirements for it?

I believe you need to use the services of a merchant like www.authorize.net ... unless of course you are big enough to negotiate with VISA, Amex, Mastercard, etc. ... which your friend's business probably isn't.
