The two companies (i.e. VISA, MasterCard) are independent from each other, even though a lot of times we see VISA MasterCard right next to each other. VISA is accepted at 30 million locations worldwide and there are 1.7 billions VISA cards issued. On the other hand, MasterCard is accepted at 28 million locations and has 981 million cards issued.
