Aaahh!! this is one of my favourite classic animation from Disney's fairytales series..although Cindirella was a hit in the box office but this one is beautifully crafted. Dark and has a unique production design, thanks to Evynd Earle which Disney gave a lot of artistic freedom and this decision was a bit frowned upon by other artists since they don't have much freedom in designing characters since they have to adjust to earle's unique backgrounds..one of the character designer of sleeping beauty was Tom Oreb who was able to pull off a wonderful job in designing the characters..this feature which was released during the 50's a decade of artistic upheaval in the animation which was triggered by the 1941 Disney strike..Marc Davis the creative genius behind the magnificent character design of maleficent Davis was also the one behind the design of Cruella deVil..this feature also sported the Xerography technology which was new during those times..if naka notice mo medyo "sketchy" ang presentation sa mga characters sa kani nga film ug sa 101 dalmatians..anyway nice ni nga feature the best in Disney's fairytale series.. Behind this wonderful animated gem sleeping beauty has a bit of a bad artistic history an article from a site cartoonmodern by Amid Amidi discusses the problem in detail

taken from a blog entry at www.cartoonmodern.blogsome.com written by Amid Amidi

"...his art direction on SLEEPING BEAUTY was an artistic failure. It took me a long time to understand why I didn’t like Earle’s art direction on the film. That’s because in and of themselves, there are some beautiful backgrounds throughout SLEEPING BEAUTY. It’s not that Earle’s vision for the film is poor; it’s that as art director, his vision extended only as far as his backgrounds and didn’t encompass the needs of the entire film.

The costliest mistake was that Walt Disney granted an inexperienced animation artist like Earle so much control over the look of the film. When Earle was made the film’s art director in 1955, his total experience in animation totalled less than four years. He failed to understand the nature of animation production, which demands a creative give-and-take between competing artistic visions. Instead, Earle insisted that everybody follow his unwavering artistic ideas, not recognizing that his vision wasn’t expansive enough to carry an entire animated feature on its own. He ended up alienating himself from the animation crew, and didn’t pay attention to how his backgrounds worked in context of the character designs, animation and storytelling. Perhaps that’s one reason why people frequently describe the film’s look as ‘cold.’ Earle was unable to bridge the visual gap between backgrounds and characters, and there is an uneasy distance between the film’s visual elements. Granted, Tom Oreb did a commendable job of styling the character designs to fit into Earle’s visual scheme, but it is a superficial stylization that wasn’t followed through by the animation director or the animators.

The poor visual harmony of SLEEPING BEAUTY is moreso apparent when placed alongside Disney’s follow-up feature 101 DALMATIANS. Here is a terrific example of what happens when an entire crew is on the same page. DALMATIANS screenwriter and storyboard artist Bill Peet, who set the tone of the film’s design, had worked in animation for over twenty years, and he understood the type of characters that could work in animation. Peet’s direct and sketchy visual styling was picked up by the film’s art director Ken Anderson, who developed the look of the film in tandem with other artists like layout stylist Ernie Nordli, color stylist Walt Peregoy and character stylist Tom Oreb. Animator Marc Davis, who was sympathetic to the modernist qualities of the film, delivered one of the finest animation performances of his career, Cruella de Vil. 101 DALMATIANS feels solid visually because it was creatively inclusive and the entire crew was working together, unlike SLEEPING BEAUTY where a single individual took charge of the design and unsuccessfully tried to force the entire production to adapt to his stylistic eccentricities..."

do you guys agree on this? you can check out Earle's designs in the above website or sa lain pa nga mga sites

In my opinion well it could've been a disaster...to the untrained eye cguro it will be okay lang pero if we look at it in an artist's point of view it could've been really disastrous being that this feature is not in Disney's backyard kai realistic jd baya sya it's a disney hallmark nga realistic jd ang tanan hasta paglihok sa tao dpat sakto jd..pero timing lang cguro nga nka hire syag mga other artists nka adjust sa style sa medyo impressionistic backgrounds ni earle..well this is my opinion

Bro sayon ra kaayo ang sleeping beauty ug ang snow white i differentiate oi..snow white is usually a jolly type or somehow "wholesome" kaayo ug feel..well i've been watching cartoons most of my life (kai aspiring animator lagi kunohay ta..hehe!!)and ma acquire na na nmo..just like sa comics ba..no matter how jim lee changes his style if familiar jd kas agi ni jim lee dli najd ka mailad..ako nka familiar man ko gamai sa agi ni Eavynd Earle mao ma differentiate nko kai iyaha bya to tanan nga mga layout design sa backgrounds..pasalamat jd kos cebu cable ato sa una oi..kai gipurga man gd kog mga looney tunes cartoon shorts ug mga classic nga walt disney..classic mao ta ni aim sa kani nga thread for those people who have knowledge sa mga karaan nga cartoons.

thanks for the link bai ramini. i'm amazed of your extent knowledge for disney classics. lahi man toh ako tirada when i was a kid gud, i grew up on the 80's so mostly japanese giant robots and american animated series ako mahinumdoman.

pero kahinomdom ko back in high school sa cartoon network ila gipa kita mga disney classics and one of them was "Steamboat Willie". lingaw sad kay kato pa ko kakita cartoon nga black and white. pag elementary kay i remember watching disney shorts sad sa gma 7 mga 4pm weekdays man cguro toh ug every saturday/sunday morning. hehe gaya na ato uy.

about sa dope sheet or exposure sheet, di kaayo ko familiar kay purely 3d animations ra ko and ive no background in traditional 2d cel animation. pero sa akong na sabtan kay ang dope sheet serves more as a storyboard for animators. though same concept ra kay it has frame numbers/timeline of the animation but in 3d man gud this is where we keep track all our keyframes of all our elements and its easier for us to change timing through the dope sheet. cge i'll share what i can understand from it once ive gone through the book.
