Some Undrafted and Unsigned but Promising Fil-foreigners

The talent pool in the recent Philippine Basketball drafts have indeed become deeper leading to some blue chip athletes and athletes with promising potentials left undrafted or unsigned. Here is a partial list of those Filipino-foreigners who have once applied for the draft and showed promise but never signed a PBA player contract. Who knows that maybe someday, we might just see them play in the PBA.

    Theodore Hawkins, Jr.
Theo Hawkins is a wide-bodied 6-4 forward. The Olongapo-born 210-pound athlete was once voted as the best forward in a Detroit Fil-am league and named MVP in a Sacramento Fil-am tournament. His mother Myrna hails from Mexico, Pampanga. He was a disappointment though in the 2004 PBA Draft and no team took him in. He was a clumsy ballhandler and he couldn't get his shots to fall even from 10 feet.

    Nicholas Joseph Fasano
Nick Fasano is a tall 6-3 point guard known more as a defender. He was born in Guam to a Filipina mother and an Italian father. He impressed scouts in the 2004 PBA Draft but the depth of talent in the pool left him with no team in the end.

    Richard Michael
6-1 guard Richard Benitez Michael is a Fil-Aussie who is also a part-time commercial model but his lack of defensive ability might have made scouts and coaches hesitate to pick him. He is supposedly born in Manila to Australian businessman Ralph Michael and Filipina Delia Benitez. Michael was once awarded as Rooki of the Year and Most Valuable Player as a member of the D&D Mailing Title Team in Sydney's Filipino Community League. His coach at D&D actually hyped him as a defensive stopper, a quick thinker, a scoring threat, and a rebounding demon whose vertical leap measured 44 inches.

    Dustin Coloso
The son of ex-Alaska hard-nosed guard Tim Coloso played for Kean University, a Division III school before applying for the PBA Draft 2004 where he was picked in the 3rd round by Red Bull. He never got a contract. Allan Caidic once described him as a good shooter after watching his highlight reel.

    Leodito Yanogacio
27 year-old, New Jersey-based Leo Yanogacio is a 6-3 defense-oriented guard who averaged 15 points and 6 rebounds in 25 games for NCAA Division III Rutgers-Newark University in 2001 and is reportedly a tremendous high-leaper.

    Mark Caguco
29-year-old, 5-10 Mark Caguco is touted as a hard-nosed point guard defender who was born in Naga City(Bicol region) to Filipino parents and grew up in Los Angeles. He was hired as a practice player by the defunct Shell franchise in 2001. He was undrafted in 2003.

    Chris Guinto
29-year-old, 6-6, 220-pound Chris Guinto is an overweight pivot who once played for the Pampanga Dragons in the defunct Metropolitan(Metroball?) Basketball Association(MBA). The son of Masantol, Pampanga Natives was born in Hayward, California and played for the San Jose State University.

    Gabe Pagtama
As a freshman and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jr.'s teammate at the Sta. Monica Junior, the 28-year-old, 6-1 point guard was said to have great player potential. In fact, he was voted as one of the top 5 cagers in California when he was still a freshman in Santa Monica High School.

    Joseph Lee Dominguez
Joseph Dominguez is a 28-year-old, 5-10 point guard who once played for the University of Winnepeg in Canada and is a native of Pampanga. He is much hyped to have well-kept credentials when he came for the draft in 2003, but that was all he had.

    David Pennisi

6 feet 10 inches David Pennisi is Mick Pennisi's brother who was rumored to be eyeing to apply for the PBA draft soon. Chances of him being included in the national team is slim though as he had a stint with Italy's "B" National Team. Having him around the PBA should raise the bar of competition higher though, so I'd still love to have him play professioanl basketball in the Philippines.

    Nick Stephens

6-5 Nick Stephens plays both wing positions for Holy Names University at the US NAIA, the same league where Marc Caguioa played. He even led the Hawks in points (17.2) and rebounds(6. in the 2004-05 Season before sitting out the 2005-06 season and had a pretty impressive basketball resume.

I hope this David Penissi guy is not as barbarous as his brother when it comes to playing basketball. I just hate that guy big time!
