Here is a good quote from Mr. Glenn Lim of Dinghead Farm in Carcar who won the Cebu Cocker of the Year 2004 and Stag Breeder of the Year 2005...
"I have never fought in the naked heel although my friend Carri (Son in law of Dong Lacson) has fought the same blood numerous times and have won convincingly...however, i am only interested in their value as graders.
Brazilians tend to be gamer in steel compared to most orientals. Before i even go on...i would like to clarify that not all Brazilians are good. There are just as many Brazilian breeders in the world as there are other type of orientals.
My Brazilians have a knack for hitting the underwing-armpit area on the first to third buckle. They do not try to evade sideways instead they try to get the jump ahead of the other cock. "quick on the draw" ...its not about speed ....its all about timing.
As the fight progresses...they become stronger. The first one i had was nicknamed "DEISEL" because like a deisel engine...it took him time to warm up but as soon as he did he just kept going for hours.
Anyway, when i first brought the Brazilian to my farm 6 years ago...my farm boys were not too excited and in fact were so worried that i might breed so many ugly looking fowl and lose so many fights...(they were worried they would never see their share of the pot money or any trophies) One of them even ask.."sir why are we even considering breeding that ugly thing...we have so many of those where i come from in basilan and they make good soup"
With that comment...i said.."go pick your most favorite stag on cord (except the pures) and tie the knife on him" we proceeded to tie the knife on the brazilian stag and the stag that they picked...(at the time..i bred mostly Sweaters, Butchers, and Albanys) well , i really was not confident at the time of the outcome but i just wanted to prove something. On the first buckle the brazilian clipped the other stag with what seemed to be only a push without much noise...it set the other stag 3 feet back and as soon as the stag tried to come running back to the brazilian....it started to stumble and died rushing to the ground.
I was so amazed at the outcome. I was then, enlightened that SPEED is not everything and that TIMING is. That CUTTING is worth 10 times more than FEROCIOUS POWER.
And that WING NOISE is what glamorized the American fowl...BUT that EXTREME SMARTS is what sets the oriental apart and above the American fowl.
In my attempt to rationalize why Brazilian grades "DO SO MANY AMAZING THINGS"...I have come up with my own analysis...AS PURES...THEY HAVE SO MANY THINGS THEY WANT TO DO BUT ARE LIMITED TO WHAT THEIR PHYSICAL MAKE-UP CAN ONLY MUSTER. BUT WHEN THEY ARE GRADED AND SUPPLIED WITH THE WINGS AND THE STEALTH FORM OF THE AMERICAN FOWL...THEY BEGIN TO PERFORM WHAT THEY HAVE ALWAYS DREAMED OF DOING WHILE THEY WERE TRAPPED INSIDE THAT UGLY MASSIVE BULK OF MUSCLE AND BONE." (sabong.net.ph)
There are just as many Asil/Oriental varieties on earth as there are Western chickens. And like western chickens , 70% are JUNK.
But when you find the right ones.....you are on your way to cocking heaven.
I have yet to prove that my breeding project is not a waste of effort...
I still have to see what their fighting style is at 50/50 then I will decide if I would go further and grade them to 1/4 or 1/8... The only proving ground is the pit!
I really am for the enjoyment of breeding and raising gamefowls that is why I decided to experiment with Orientals...
