i do agree in most situation because if you have a good mathematical skills you also have a good analytical skills. in programming, you have to have a good analytical skills. if you're analytical skills is not as good as what you think, you can enhance it by doing practice, more practice and lots of practice. if you have 10,000 hours of practice, then you will know what i mean. if you're in doubt ask Malcom Gladwell.

"common sense" is common to all person. the question is if your common sense is the same with the other person. you may perceived something as common sense but to the other is not. you may have a good judgment but the other don't.

that's why imho, "common sense" has no place in programming. you have to ask even the most obvious fact to make it right.

Brad, dugay na ko ug cge programming. More than 10 years na pero akong gigamit kay common sense. You have been equipped of different programming languages and syntaxes but you don't know how to use it or apply it in the real-world scenario. Daghan maayong laki sa mga syntax pero pag walay common sense ang imong software or web or mobile apps walay ayo or walay gamit. Daghan ko naagi-an na akong nasundan na computer program, akong gipang update or reverse engineered kay dili maayo pagkahimo. Naay mga kulang, naay wala makuha na requirements sa client ug ako nalang gitiwas.

Siguro kadtong mga programmer na akong gisundan wala nag gamit ug common sense.

i respect your opinion and i'm sure you're good at what you do.

if a programmer don't know how to apply a syntax of the programming language to accomplish a certain task or software design i could say 2 things.

    • the programming language MAY NOT BE THE SUITABLE programming language to develop the software.
    • the programmer is not a programmer.

YOU as a programmer knows that a software program is always evolving. it requires continues modification due to change in business process/policies and real world requirements. i'm sure a software program serves its purpose that time when it was developed and implemented before you came and update it.

however, due to the reasons i stated above it will require an update/upgrade to be more useful and continue to stand the test of time. it doesn't necessarily mean that the programmers have or don't have common sense. they are just following the design specifications as stated or required by the business that time. if you're common sense is to be followed and not the software design what kind of software will it be? do you think it will be useful?

Daghan ko naagi-an na akong nasundan na computer program, akong gipang update or reverse engineered kay dili maayo pagkahimo. Naay mga kulang, naay wala makuha na requirements sa client ug ako nalang gitiwas.
again, changing or reverse engineering a software program doesn't mean that you have or don't have a "common sense". if what you're saying is true, then the programmers from Microsoft, SAP, Oracle and the rest of the software giants don't have common sense because they're continously updating their softwares.

i started using Microsoft DOS then Windows 3.1 in 1993 and yet we are now close to 2013 and still Microsoft Windows is still being updated and widely used.

OT: why boast as if you're the source of your wisdom?
