I recommend the school to be your own school, meaning nothing beats self-study gyud

don't really depend on the teaching at the school, mostly are just way basic ra ang gina teach, labi na mg depende sa teacher

mga bro's again IMHO. The best school is the Real World and the best teacher is Experience. Nothing compares the number of years you are exposed on the field rather than expecting too much from school. Schools only teach the basic but the advance is what you earn on your exposure.

i'm a current CS student at UP Cebu, I can tell you they NEVER spoonfeed the students.they talk the tip of a topic once and assume you follow up with more reading about the topic, next day dayon kay implement sa laboratory session. very fast-paced jud ang teaching dili mohuwat sa mga wa kasabot. hay intawn ako gabitay ra ta... pero nag-mao ta noh!

not bragging, pero UP Cebu CS division was recently given a Center of Excellence title from CHED. hopefully mobetter na pud amo facilities dinhi kay usa ra ka room ang nindot jud, naay usa ka room windows 98 pa! ubang rooms ang mga computer kay gakamang kung dili assembly/c programming buhaton.

i plan to take many certifications after graduation, pambawi sa ako gagmay nga T.O.R. stats. pero kabalo ko nga nakamao sad ko. daghan kaayo studious kaayo magtuon pero blanko inig lab. desente pud ta intawn inig coding. supposedly mas importante ang analysis/problem solving skills (i suck at math though) kaysa memory nga maoy puhunan sa mga studious.

tinuod lang, unsa kadako ang gamit sa math inig trabaho og like computer programmer or the likes? kay kapoya aning math ba nga asa gud na ipangbutang ang integral og trigonometry inig coding!

Read the basics in programmeing, buy books, research, download some stuff like ebooks, Open source codes, and etc, there yah go... its cheaper rather going to an expensive piece of school..

Gamit kaayo nang math bro inig coding - consider the following - Digital Signal Processing, Image Processing Algorithms, Fast Fourier Transforms, Cipher and Encryption Algorithms. Kana lang MP3, JPEG, JBIG ug uban pang Media formats - gi unsa na sila pag imbento kung wala pa nang math? Gamit na kaayo imong mathematics/specially calculus ana.

In the fields of Digital Signal Processing - ang conversion lang from time domain to frequency domain and vice versa inig programming involves a lot of theory.. before you can even begin to program in C or assembly. The way we did it is we model the data in MATLAB, then we convert the algorithms to C and C++.

In areas of Image Processing - mao lang gihapon, gamit gihapon ang mathematics. In Kodak (where I work before), we constantly have to deal with edge detection algorithms, sobel algorithms, signal integration and differentiation (Calculus maxima/minima). Again gamit kaayo ang MATLAB to prove the theory, then using the algorithm - i convert dayon to C and C++ or even assembly para i program sa embedded SOC board (System on a Chip).

In areas of Web Development - There was one time I was working for a client who want to speed up their web search. I was working with a group of programmers though. There was a theory - expressed in Mathematical formulas, if you don't know your math, dili ka ka convert sa theory into algorithms.

In areas of Finance - Equities, Derivatives, etc. - Labaw pa. This is the area where I'm working now. We deal with Mathematical models of how the market performs and behaves based on a number of factors. The software we are creating and have been maintaining communicates with different stock markets all over the world - most notably Zurich, London, New York, Chinese stock exchanges and Japan - If you don't know your Math, dili ka ka program ug unsa-on pag predict sa market performance based on a number of criteria.

For Research and Development Companies - it is easier to hire a Mathematician and teach them programming, rather than hire a programmer who doesn't know Mathematics.

MATHEMATICS is VERY IMPORTANT in Computer Science - specially Calculus and Physics, gamit kaayo na nimo wala lang ka kabalo. Mathematics is the foundation of Computer Science baya.

Schools are important - they teach you the basics, they teach you the foundation. Don't expect them to teach you everything - that is something you have to earn and learn in the real world.

Yepp, I agree, but it really depends on what area of Computer Science you're planning to specialize. If you're interested with computer vision, dsp, and encryption, then linear algebra and calculus are very useful. If you're just planning to create business applications, then advanced Math is not really needed.

With systems-level programming, advanced Math is not really needed unless you venture deeper. This is usually the case if you work in R&D, and that your work is mostly cutting-edge and theoretical.

In short, you can get away without knowing much Math as long as you have aptitude. However, you will just be implementing something what others have designed. These architects and computer scientists will have much higher salary than ordinary programmers and software engineers. If you are now presently working as a programmer without knowing much Math, then you must act now. Don't rest on your laurels; go grab a Math book.

for Comp Sci for me its UP. Other school is from away from UP in terms of training is Computer Science field. Thats why they excel because wa kaau gahi mga school compare to them. That is also why UC do not offer Comp Sci because its very broad compare to IT.
