i have seen the report last thursday on cnn headline news.Â* it's appalling but not surprising in a third world country.Â* i am not embarassedÂ* by it as a filipino at all coz almost everybody knows man gyud that inÂ* a developing country things like these happens.Â* besides, the guy who brought
the story to the international mediaÂ* obviously wants to help these kids and been doing it for years, in fact there wasÂ* a charity bank account mentioned where people can donate money.Â* they did it for the funding not to embarass our country, besides the world should know the plight of these kids coz no kids deserve to be in jailed with an adult felon no matter what crime they have committed.

My sister was at work in Marriott Hotel in Virginia, and she was with her workmates to get something to eat. While they were eating they saw this report on CNN, and her workmates were starting to comment about it, children, prisoners just read the above link coz I can't really describe it, I don't watch CNN.

The most embarassing thing about it was when the report said Philippines after long minutes of watching, everybody so suddenly turned to where she was.

Naulaw kuno siya, iya nalang giingnan iya mga workmates dili tanang part sa Pnas. Perhaps they're wondering why she turned out good.

For me it's duh, many countries have very poor neighbourhoods and prison cells, kini man gung ubang taw sa kalibutan like here in the US ignorante kaayo ma shock pa gyud sila, i-shack shack ta mo.
dli ra man sa pinas ra na ang nangahitabo ana, sa uban lugar pud oy... mas grabe pa ana... bwahahahahahahaa

Wow, all this passionate discussion inspires me and reminds me that there is hope for the Philippines.

Really, I have not seen the CNN segment, but I have read Avila's article. I don't know much about this person's politics, but I do know he wrote this opinion piece with his own perspective of what things are. I am amazed that he was able to telegraph his political bias in a few statements despite the fact that this was supposed to have been written as a response to the CNN "documentary." I think the article could have been revised to improve some apparent or glaring grammatical errors (disclaimer: I am not an English major) as well the obvious, shall we say, "misguided" choice of words. I suspect the op/ed editor didn't bother to "edit" the draft to conform to the paper's editorial standards because it was destined to be in the "opinion" section. Beyond the technical quality of the article, one comprehends what Avila feels (and thus, his "opinion"): he is embarassed, shocked, and urges the reader to shift gears from P (passive) to D (do something). I will give Avila high marks for "effort" in bringing this documentary to the attention of the readers. However, he does throw the reader off when the tone of his writing shifts from a "social focus" to proclaiming his political agenda. This is where he lost me. Amazingly, he concludes the article by picking up the "let's do something about the prison system" track. Skipping past the "political detour," I think the article challenges readers to respond. A few say: "oh well, tinoud na" but what can we do? I've got other pressing problems to take care of. "That's embarassing," some will say. "I don't care." And several others. I can relate to all of these. In fact, I my response will probably vary depending on where I am and what my state of mind is. I can even relate to the people in prison because my dad was in prison during the martial law days. Avila did readers a favor when he wrote this article; he should have gone further and pushed for the obvious---that minors should be placed in a different detention facility than adults. It doesn't matter how backward and destitute the country is, for as long as it recognizes the fact that minors need to be treated differently in a prison system, that country is headed in the right direction.

    ouch pero in-the-face true.

every country has its problem, and shock sila cuz they don't see it all the time, pero naa gud gihapon mga pobre sa US. pabuta buta pabungolbungol lng gud.

ako sad tingali if i see a docu like this from mexico ba ron, i'd think the whole mexico has gone mad. siguro i wouldn't be able to help it.

There is really HOPE in the PHILIPPINES . Makakita ba mo ug mga PILIPINO ug PILIPINA nangamatay sa GUTOM sa PILIPINAS ?? WALA gyud , kana mga prison cells , politicans nato , terrorist network in the south , YES angay ta na ika-ulaw but NO , why ? Even the US is guilty of it also having its existence and na ulaw ba sila ? Wala kay there is nothing to be ashame of , angay lang ka maulaw kung ikaw na ang POLITICIAN , PRISONER , and TERRORIST as a FIlipino citizen pero kung law abiding ka , walay problema gyud . Again , MEDIA is nothing of a MEDIUM now a days , pure business na lang gyud .

I'm pretty sure I do not have to hide behind anyone to post my mind thank you. I am sure of one thing though, the person you are arguing with must be one with great intellect, vision, and inner strength.
