Default Old school music?? or new school music!?

i really don't know where to start.... i've been playing the drums for s0me 10yrs now.... i've experienced some old school stuff pero i'm into new school now... with regards to new school drummers being timekeepers, WHAT'S WRONG W/ THAT?? my principles have changed over the years... i now believe that "LESS IS MORE".. i really don't consider drummers who are extremely skillful "technically" to be "GOOD"... a drummer's ability to provide what a song really needs is a measure of him being a good musician.... for example, one of the more brilliant Chad Smith contributions to RHCP's Blood Sugar *** Magic album was his extremely laid back approach to the song "I could have lied".... could u imagine the song with another drum pattern

Moreover, in music, Nobody has the Monopoly of Truth.... i'm not saying that my opinion is right... but to label the musicians of the so called "new school" as boring, is downright judgemental... I do respect prog rock/metal, in fact, for a time i listened to dream theater and Rush, but i hate those people who insist that prog rock/metal is the "IT". its just plain "intellectual superiority".... comparing Old Skool, as u define it and the New School is like comparing different works of art made during different era's.... classic painters like michaelangelo and rembrandt are more complicated are more superficial... picasso's art on the otherhand, while wanting technically, tickle the imagination... do u get my point??

anyway, hope u don't take offense to what i'm saying.. as a fellow musician, (am i one?? hmmm...) i sincerely respect your opinions... I hope that a lot of the "older" musicians consider the overall effect of the song rather than its technicalities...

    .....

...........sheesh i had goosebumps all over my body when i read this, eventhough i haven't seen the video but damn bozzio. Damn you Bozzio!!!! hehehehe. And i would like to wack that wackerman dude. I have this weird habit when i go to i-net cafe's; i download bozzio's drumkit, fill the whole screen with it, go find and download some bozzio solos and the freaky Duende of BLS, i hit the soundblasters to maximum, don't minding the other users, and stare at the screen. I try to understand to which and where do the drumnotes go, and everytime i do this,i go out of the cafe feeling good and drowsy, mahubog gyud ko ug paminaw, hehehehe.

    ..........RYAN AND MARTINSKY99,

here in the music and radio forum, when it comes to guitars; you must shut your mouth and listen to Carlo and Glassmoon and when it comes to drums, listen to Ezra and if Roadworthyman speaks, you shut up. And as for me, i'm just an unknown drummer in the music scene but i assure you, i'm not just a timekeeper. For you new-age-rock fans you don't know what you are talking about. You are all wannabees. You try to defend musicians (kuno, ambot lang ) that are mere timekeepers or should i say knows only 3 chords in the guitar.

In fact if you listen to Linkin Parks album it sounds like it's just one song. BORING BORING BORING BORING. Glassmoon named these bands; linkin park, limp, mudvayne, the GRR GRR bands, cause if you listen to their guitar riffs all you hear is grr grr, BORING BORING BORING. Rapping is just a sorry excuse or escape of not being able to compose a good melody. Let's me cut it down for you boring-new-age-rock-fans so that you can understand better:
    the new-metal band's music is;

drumlines or drummers are just timekeepers
guitarists......no real solo, not even a decent chord progression
    bassists.....samot!!
keys.....do they have keys??and if they have one, i'm sure it
will sound like a church choir.
vocalists.....they're rapping and shouting, they should change
"vocalists" to "screamers or rappers", cause this
guys don't know how to sing.
i'll bet my life that if you listen to dreamtheater or maybe mr. big, you won't like it, cause.........YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND GOOD MUSIC!!!

BOTTOM LINE; NEW AGE METAL IS LOWER THAN DIRT.

CUJO: ... There was a big discussion about the "Less is More" issue in the drum forum I frequent to ... .. Necessity and applying what is appropriate is the most important thing as far as drumming goes. Overplaying isn't beauty either.. but underplaying a piece is bland.

Steve Gadd's playing with Eric Clapton isn't flashy in the most part.... but in all the right corners, he pulls stuff from his toolbox and applies it on the music. In his situation... less will never be more.. playing what is appropriate makes the song stand out.

New School Drummers are far from being "NOT-GOOD" .. they're good, they're just not as musical. Imagine Stewart Copeland sitting behind the kit with these so-called PUNK bands nowadays... I bet it would be pretty exciting and tasteful with everything in context.

For me... technical drummers are always good.. as well as the grooving drummers.

The drummers I look up to doesn't throw the flashiest fills ... maybe except for Neil Peart.... but most of the drummers I revere are groovemeisters. They have the technical skills but they depend on the deep pocket to make the song stand out.
Terry Bozzio doesn't amaze me all that much... well he does, to an extent. But the Portnoys, Bozzios, Manginis, Donatis.. they don't give me the same effect as what STEVE GADD does... or Steve Smith, Colaiuta, Beauford, Porcaro, and Weckl.

Talking about a simple groove with the candies in all the right places... check out Dave Matthews Band's #41.. simple yet beautiful.
Jeff Porcaro's shuffle groove in ROSANNA... can you get a deeper groove than that!!!
Neil Peart's work in the songs RESIST and BRAVADO (Test for Echo and Roll the Bones respectively) is very well arranged.. not very flashy compared to his usual stuff .. this is the guy who said "LESS WILL ALWAYS MEAN LESS".. of course, coming from him, I am not surprised.

The "less is more" principle was applied with Wilk's work in the Audioslave album (So he says in Modern Drummer, April 2003 issue) I checked the album out of curiousity since he was on the MD magazines front page* .. that album was a total bore drumwise. He kept it simple but he forgot to put some flavor into his playing.
