The internet is a good starting point. You can do research on the basics. Then if you have specific questions we'll discuss it here so you can design your path.

    Best regards.

    ON AUDIO:

The 3 main categories of audio in movies are Voice, Music and sound effects.

During post, I dedicate one audio track for each actor with speaking line (even if it's just one word).

The next tracks are for music. Again one track for each music.

The next layers are for SFX. Again one track for each, this will include but not limited to room tone, ambiant sound, footsteps, cloth and other foleys.

You may wonder why I use individual track for each. In my experience, this is the way sound engineers do it for organization, easy monitoring and this gives you more control during sound mixing.

And when cutting for dialogue, I cut audio first coz in principle if it sounds natural then it will be natural.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards...

What are the 4 dimensions of movie editing?
    1. Graphic Relationship from shot A to Shot B - it has to be similar in composition, movement to create the graphic match. e.g. a person is being laid down on one scene, and then the next incidentally another character is going to bed in the same movement as the last. Or watch THE SEVEN SAMURAI, I believe Kurosawa uses straight cuts but the graphic match is achieved because he gives thumbnails of each of the characters running in the same direction.

    2. Spatial - how you manipulate space and put that someone in the same space and time in the universe of your scene. e.g. You can shoot someone reacting to a gasoline station exploding but the gasoline station doesn't have to be right in front of them in the shoot, shoot the gas station in a different place and then you merge those 2 locations as one setting in editorial.

If you're familiar with THE WITNESS by SineBuano, when the female cop gets in the bathroom, the actress playing the girl isn't there, it was just the cinematographer/director... but cut together with an earlier scene where the D.P. was leaning against the wall shooting the 2 actresses together. the director has seamlessly combined that SPACE into one, when the female officer enters the bathroom.

    3. Temporal - sequential relationship from shot A to B. this includes flash forwards. temporal displacement; this is important in storytelling and exposition if you don't want to go chronologically, you want to delay exposition or you're just fond of red herrings. Watch CASABLANCA and M. Night Shyamalan's THE VILLAGE.

    4. Rhythmic Editing - controlling the length of shots. it's a very psychological thing but you must give people the space to have whatever reaction they're gonna have by controlling the RHYTHM of your shots.

I believe elliptical editing is, hence it's name to abbreviate a sequence and it's one way of controlling the rhythm, unless an expert correct me I reckon elliptical editing is a sub-dimension of the Rhythmic Dimension of Editing.

If you don't have this form yet, just check with google and you'll get lots of link.

    Hope this helps.
