They're not summons, they're called Espers, there's 12 of them.

Pareha ra na. Thats what they were called in FF6.

Yeah, but they're still useless in battle. You only need them for you to be able to get the Genji equipment, which can be stolen from Gilgamesh (which is the last Mob Hunt). You need to get all 12 Espers to access this hunt. That's basically the only purpose of the Espers.
