    Transport fare hike approved
    By Jonathan F. Fernandez

MANILA -- Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chief Elena Bautista announced Monday new jeepney and ordinary buses fare rates, which will take effect on May 26.

Bautista said two pesos would be added to the current P5.50 minimum fare for jeepneys plying routes in the National Capital Region (NCR) and an additional 25 centavos for every succeeding kilometer in Metro Manila and in some areas of Regions 3 and 4 near to NCR.
A two-peso increase in jeepney fares will also be imposed in the Cordillera Administration Region (CAR), Regions 1, 3, 4 and 5 but there will be no increase for every succeeding kilometer.

A one-peso fare increase in the P5.50 minimum fare for jeepneys plying routes in Region 2 in Luzon and other regions in the Visayas and Mindanao was approved, she said. There is no increase in the amount of fare for every succeeding kilometer.

A written announcement on the new fare rates will be issued by the LTFRB.

A two-peso increase in the P6 minimum fare for ordinary or non air-conditioned buses was also approved by the transport agency and 50 centavos more for every succeeding kilometer. The current additional kilometer rate is P1.25 for non-air-conditioned buses.

Transport groups had asked for a fare increase to cope with increasing cost of oil and its by-products.

Bautista said they maintained the 20 percent discount for senior citizens and students in jeepney and ordinary bus fares. However, she said, students would not be given discounts when there are no classes like during summer, weekends and legal holidays.

Bautista clarified that fare for air-conditioned buses and FX taxis are not covered by the new fare increase as operators of those vehicles have yet to file a petition for increase in fare rates.

She also explained that the new fare rates will take effect on May 26 yet as the law provides that any new fare increase should first be published in a newspaper of general circulation.
