Take a look at the fault map of the Philippines...
(please mods, a small plea--just this time around, please don't adjust the size of this image--this is important and educational, thanks daan)
...basically, the red lines indicate active faults...meaning, Cebu and hundreds of other locales have always been earthquake prone--you simply didn't know about it til now. The point is, if the last major quake in Cebu happened ages, ago, then chances are, yes, there could be another one soon, but as to exactly when you cannot possibly predict this, because a quake is merely a "snapping" of the movement tectonic plates, and unless you have instruments buried deep under the earth in these fault lines, then you can never tell kung kanus-a mahitabo ang pag "snap".
Ergo, why are you worried NOW? You should've worried LONG BEFORE because the Cebu fault has ALWAYS been there...
...ergo (yet again), if you don't want to live near a fault line, consider moving to PALAWAN. 'Nuff said.

I wish Lahar (someone I know who works for Phivolcs) was here to explain to you guys what's going on. Aftershocks always happen after a major slippage--that's why they are called aftershocks. If you're telling me that aftershocks indicate a possible future earthquake then we should stop calling them aftershocks and start calling them beforeshocks. How shocking indeed. *rolls eyes*Originally Posted by giddyboy
And btw, kulang ra nang 34...aftershocks run up to the hundreds, even thousands, the only reason why it never makes the press is that most of them are below 1 on the Richter Scale and can only be detected via seismometers. Heck you can even simulate and aftershock via a 10-wheeler truck full of cargo passing by the station (I witnessed this personally at a Phivolcs station in Camiguin Island).

i didn't mention aftershocks before an earthquake...what i said is that the earthquake in Isabela started yesterday nya naay 34 aftershocks that lasted up to this morning...pls read my previous post...mao btaw nang gtawag ug AFTER-shock, not PRE-shock...Originally Posted by rodsky
and the text msg as a hoax is another story and does not relate it to the Isabela quake.
what maybe understood here is the likely possibility of another quake in places other than Isabela. well, dili nata mahibulong ana...we sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire...
Ok sorry for quoting your post and using it to elaborate on my cause for non-panic. I was merely trying to underline the value of clear-headedness and not jumping into conclusions, because people might mistakenly use your info and use it as "evidence" to prove that this 6.8 quake is really going to happen. Which is a very likely scenario considering the gullibility we frequently witness around here.Originally Posted by giddyboy

It's all simple--if you live on a fault, chances are, in your 70-90-year lifespan as a human being, you will experience no less than 3 major earthquakes in your life, and one of those major will have the potential to kill you--it's all a given, it's called statistics, a much better and more reliable math than phantom predictions like the ones circulating in text messages. Like I said, if people don't want a Sword of Damocles hanging on their heads, then move to a place like Palawan (I see no faults there). Again I'm not saying there will be no quake--I'm saying, live on a fault, experience quakes, period.Originally Posted by giddyboy

Naturally. We are on a different Pacific Plate. People who buy pirated BBC Documentaries near fuente, like "Earth Story" know this more than everyone elseOriginally Posted by giddyboy
gwapo pa kaayo ang graphics and explanation.
Way better than Rambo or Jumper.
