@springfield - makapanghupaw gyud bitaw ko aning imong observation. Becoz yes to a huge extent you are absolutely right. It is amazing how here in the Philippines, puerteng daghanang tawo sa dalan. Daghan kaayong naghinguto-ay ug nag chismis. Didto sa gawas puerteng mingawa kay hapit tanan nag double job (not all though there are a lot of bums too but they're at home being couch potatoes and not out on the streets) But at the same time, I am amazed at the men in carbon who heave heavy sacks on their caritons and push with all their might across pot hole ridden streets for a mere few pesos a day. For the jeepney/taxi driver who have taken the rising costs of fuel with no corresponding adjustment in fares. Sa mga guardia who are padi minimum wages but are expected to give up their lives for the establishments that pay for their services. Are we filipinos lazy or have we just given up on ourselves or have we given up on our government?
No one wants chaos, nor impeachment (ang mga congressman ra ang nangadato ana kay kada move to impeach naa man dayuy game nga ang tawag if the price is right) but whether pro administration or opposition or neutral we just want to have hope. But the more the accusations of plunder, corruption, bribery or just a total overall lack of direction (which should be dictated by this country's leader) that hope slowly dims for so many of us.
What do all of us want? Change, a change for the better be it with the current leadership through a change in heart and spirit or through the election of a new leader who will lead this country with a conscience and vision.

try comparing your numbers with our neighbors, vietnam started opening its door to foreign investment only in 1994 and yet their growth is much faster than ours. direct foreign investment in the Phils is only about $ 2.7B compared to $8B in Thailand.

mind u, i've known farmers in the north up close & personal. i've relatives that are "reloheros" in Colon. i've also been frequenting the Cebu port areas and made acquaintances w/ a couple of porters there. i've also known a couple of pork tinderos in Carbon. I've known a few tinderos in manalili. and is that the gov't fault why they are there?

and this is not to say i'm more knowledgeable than anybody here. i'm just sharing my own experience...i could be wrong.

my point? yes, they work hard for their families...it's hard but it's decent...unless they change their business or job, they will always remain farmers, kargadors, pork vendors, and small-time sidewalk traders. and small as it seems their kind of trade, a pork vendor could be earning more than a callcenter agent earns in a year!

and they don't blame the gov't for what they are. they don't blame anybody. they blame themselves. if only they had pursued their education wisely enough, things could have been better. but mind u, in contrast, they could be happier & contented in those situations than a highly paid callcenter agent can get...

yes, dili lage ma feel ang numbers kundi ang gutom sa tiyan sa naglisod natong mga igsoon. dili mana cla kasabot anang economics...good for us more educated people ky mka sabot man...pero just bear in mind that dili ang gobyerno ang mka hatag sa tanang kinahanglan sa tawo kundi ang kakugi sa tawo ra mismo ug ang pag gahin ug prioridad sa expenses. kita na ba kag mga tawo nga buwad, ginamos ug bahaw ra ang kan-on pero mahalon ang celfon, kumpleto pa sa load? unya mka afford pa gyud ug pusta sa lotto, tong-its, video carera, or mahjong? try to visit this little island near Bohol called Quaming bro, and u will know what i mean. pobre lagi pero...hahay nlng.

and speaking of equal opportunities, doesn't the unionized labor in the ports not an equal opportunity? is having a licensed stall in Carbon not an equal opportunity? even if u compare us to Vietnam, yes they are progressing more than us. But every country has a different story...

is it totally the gov't fault if there is more investment in Thailand, Vietnam, or China? AFAIK, these countries have cheaper labor. as an example, that's why Ford is investing $500M in Thailand as compared to only $50M in Phils.

And still a lot more BPO's in India than ours. But we are catching up coz we have an edge in the English language and our service is more superb...

And how about tourism? gov't gihapon to blame? AFAIK, usually the hindrance for tourism is the travel advisories against Phils. u don't blame the NPA's or Abu Sayyaf for that?

and yes, 8 yrs btaw na naglingkod c gma as president, syaro wa sab ka kita sa agi...

and yes, maybe her best is not good enough for some of us...but at least she is a "working president", not a womanizing, plundering, "pang-masa" facade only, and a non-performing drunkard president like Erap.

i am not sure if we are catching up, our neighbors have overtaken us.
anyway, i agree with you that every country have a story, ours is just a sad one to some and good to some.

what i mean with catching up is our BPO industry...

and again, yes, maybe PGMA's best is not good enough for some of us...but at least she is a working president...so busa inig 2010 election, vote wisely...and hopefully we get a better president we deserve.

and it is also best to avoid the black & white, anti-gma vs pro-gma mentality...this would make our country more polarized and divisive. im even tempted to suggest to organize a GRAY MOVEMENT (not gay ha) for that matter...hehe

i really hope so that we can have a better president.
i am just afraid because the greater number of the population are below the poverty threshold and might be taken advantage again by politicians. i hope and pray that this country will be great again because i love my philippines.

The world is unfair, life is unfair. Making the poor as a gauge is inaccurate. There are poor people everywhere even in America and progressive cities in Europe

Don't compare Thailand to the Philippines because it is undebatable that we are MORE corrupt. Take note WE, not only the politicians. We have a culture of corruption gyud. Even anywhere we are in the world, somehow we still exercise that culture.

My only guage is just like giddyboy's. Let's talk figures and performance and compare them with the past administrations. Not to mention what the president did to somehow turn our country from Erap's administration.

My "practicality" might be a bulok mentality to some moral activists here but if the president will take a little something for herself as here "retirement plan" for her hardwork compared to the others, piyongan na lang na nako bahala na mo ingon mo ug mao ba na ang klase nga values akong i-pass down sa akong anak.

Haylas be, sige nato isuka ang tawo mo lingkod diha sa malacanang kay statistically, wa man gyud tarong nga molingkod diha para sa mga moralist diri basin asta atong mga apo di makakita anang morality na inyong pasabot.

i know that there are poor people around the world, i've seen them in the streets of new york, chicago, tokyo, hongkong, even france and other places. but with the increasing number of poor people in the country, isnt that telling us something?

i agree with your point that our culture of corruption can be blamed for this, but do we just accept it and not make effort to change? even change in us? nothing will happen if we do not change.

The world market is not controlled by PGMA. The increase in the prices of oil products cannot be controlled by her too. We import oil, naturally the industries that are oil dependent need to adjust their own prices so as not to lose profit. As regards rice importation, the country has been importing rice even before to have enough supply for the entire population. It is said that there was a time when the Philippines exported rice. That was before when there was huge supply for a small population. But as years passed by, population grew more than the supply.

Our farmers do not yield plenty of harvest because of several factors: climate, calamities, irrigation problems, conversion of farm lands to industrial and commercial ones, even pests. But they are not without solution because the agriculture department will help the farmers learn farming techniques that will make productivity higher. The use of organic fertilizers is also encouraged. These are some assistance to help our farmers as well as the consumers.
