Harry's power revolves among his friends and family around him..if you watched the Prisoner of Azkhaban installment, Rowling gave us a glimpse of harry's ability as a wizard when he defeated a bunch of dementors using Expecto Patronum charm bcoz he found sirius dying and helpless..only an experience and a great wizard could cast that charm effectively..Harry is totally different from Voldemort since the latter prefers to work on his own which made him more weak than Harry..

i guess that's the point Rowling tries to convey on the young readers..the importance of friendship and fighting the dark side.

I think it's important that a hero be weak and have failings and need friends to help him overcome his struggles.
Not some kind of Superman-type hero but someone with failings and strengths just like us, who helps us to overcome our struggles and inspire us to continue on.

I guess that's what makes harry potter tick, he is the reluctant hero, and h is very weak,

dili man cya Naruto o Goku na maka level up dayun, he hates the spotlight, pero the spotlight follows him...

unya lami si Hermione (Emma Watson), LOTR has no pretty girls....just pretty boys....like Gimli...

u forgot Arwen and Galadriel. ka pretty ato nila hehe. pero OT na kayao.

anyway even Naruto is weak unless he really needs to be strong - like in the case of life and death situations anha ra man mo gawas iyang tinuod nga powers gali. pero kung wala mura sad siyang kinkoi. i like him, though.

same with Harry. in fact the magic in him is natural, he just needs to study more and have a little bit more discipline like Hermione. the role of his friends fill what he lacks in himself.

now i know what a parent feels like when people scoff at their kids...not that im j.k. rowling but...
after reading bad_donkey and co.'s posts and comments, i actually began asking why i liked harry potter.
one thing though: the original book isnt ALL about magic. magic , a different world where a lonely, deprived orphan can escape to, where he is revered and famous and rich (all the opposite in the muggle world) is just a way to represent the way kids sometimes fly over to fantasy land when the real world gets to be too much at times.

it just tells the story of a boy, who learned that there is still more to the world than cupboards and spiders in your socks. do you guys notice how harry was very close to dumbledore? its coping with childhood angst (if ever there was) and all the other million things that you have to face when you're growing up..the reason why it appealed to people is that in some way, at some point in their lives, they had their own private hogwarts and imaginary friends and magical powers and a hoard of gold miles under the ground...it's like one of your fondest daydreams coming alive in front of you...some people just find it a bit harder than other to let go of these fantasies..the movies may have left a lot to be desired, especially if fed to hard core film critics, but harry potter isnt all about magic.

j.k. rowling writes about LIFE and how to take on it despite the odds. its a testimony, its about friendship and loyalty and sheer courage and spirit.

the magical stunts are put on there to make the lesson more interesting.

luthienne, beg to differ please...harry is different, just as you and me and them are all different from each other..he did not LACK something.
j.k. rowling actually used harry's flaws and imperfections to emphasize that you dont have to have monumental capabilities to make a difference.. you dont even have to have 20-20 vision..you dont have to be the brightest student in class, nor the most adept and skillfull...rowling emphasized heart and spirit...voldemort caused him to be notorious.,.
harry is just a kid, come on give him a break..a kid who became the unlikely hero..i think rowling is just emphasizing the old bone about a hero living inside everyone of us..like neville...

@anniepetilla: of course i didn't mean to say he was lacking as a person. he is as whole as everybody else is. just that as a writer, you cannot make your hero perfect (otherwise there'll be not much of a story) and one way to put a little balance between a powerful foe and a mere kid character is to give him friends who will help him in some way. who have enough things in common with him and differences enough for them to complement each other.

It's different from the book, different from the previous movies.
    You might be disappointed.

But, if you can appreciate it for itself, it is still a movie worth watching.
    =) enjoy!
