    OT
I really don't think Nikon will go FF next year.. but thats just me.. and if ever D3 or something will have that design.. yikes.. I rather stay with my D200 than have a FF Nikon that looks like a toy cam..

here's what I used when I first got started and when i shot my first billboard for SOGO hotel.

    Canon 300D with Battery Grip
    Canon EFS 18-55mm
Cosina 100mm with a x1 close up filter (which BeoR now uses for his macro shots)
    Canon 50mm f1.8
a borrowed Sigma 500 DG Super but I eventually bought a Canon 550EX
    1 gig CF Card

I think this thread is not all about whats the startup equipments but are the essential equipments for a photo hobbyist. Well I can say it really depends on style..

    For general I suggest:

    Nikon D70S
    Nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR
    Nikon SB-600
    Sandisk Ultra II 1GB CF

    Thats more or less $1,500.00

Para sa Sigma na sir ... ang 70-200 2.8 IS is around SGD $2300 brand new, Sigma's 70-200 F2.8 DG is only $SGD 800 here ...
If I were to choose, if you're constrained by budget ... get this sigma na lang ... sharp, sharp, and sharp .. one of my fav. lens on a budget.

with the release of 70-200 F4 IS (around SGD $1600+), daghan na ko kakita ug 70-200 F4 non-IS second hand na gibaligya for (SGD $800)
    for basic equipment, ang 70-200 F4 non-IS I think is essential ....
