80's Glam Metal...1. It spawned many classic songs - How many times in a day does someone play the 'Sweet Child O' Mine' Intro in guitar shops around the world? Livin on a prayer, every rose has its thorns, etc....2. It was a hybrid of some of the finest influences - Imagine getting a blender and blending together all your favourite things into one massive super-thing smoothie. No you can't put that in a blender. That'd be disgusting. .... 3. It gave rise to some of the Greatest Guitarists Of All Time - Eddie Van Halen reinvented rock n roll lead guitar carried on by C.C. Deville, warren demartini, george lynch, vito bratta, etc....4. It gave rise to some of the greatest vocalists and frontmen known to man - Sebastian Bach, Axl Rose, Jim Gillete, Mike Matijevic, Mark Slaughter, David Lee Roth and Steve Tyler (of Aerosmith's late 80's revival at least) were all hugely talented, hugely charismatic frontmen who could turn a decent rock show into a great one.... 5. It produced internationally famous rock stars - Love them or hate them, it's an unavoidable truth that characters such as Axl Rose, David Lee Roth, Bret Michaels and every member of Motley Crue have made the world a crazier, if not more interesting place. Rock stars are an unusual lot. People adore their music, and long for their lifestyle, yet often absolutely detest them at the same time....6. It was typically a happy, upbeat optimistic genre - Song's such as Poison's 'Nothin' But A Good Time'; Van Halen's 'Dreams' and 'Top Of The World'; Europe's 'Halfway to Heaven'; Def Leppard's 'Armageddon It' and Autograph's 'Turn Up The Radio' were typical of the hair metal genre's happy, pro-good time disposition. People could headbang and dance to the music at the same time!...7. Some of the songs were absolute masterpieces - Of course, not all hair metal songs were an endless Festival of Cheese. From time to time, sometimes the songs were epic and moving masterpieces. Guns N Roses' 'November Rain'; Skid Row's '18 and Life'; Cinderella's 'Don't Know What You Got'; Def Leppard's 'Foolin'' and LA Guns' 'Crystal Eyes' are some examples of genuinely brilliant songs which get all air guitarists and mime vocalists to their knees.
