Haha it's nothing new in the Catholic church to be offended by p3nises. They're either painted over or hacked off from nude works of art.

Mideo Cruz’ “Poleteismo”: When Art is Condemned

In “Poleteismo”, the artist Cruz tackled the subject of idolatry – what present society would usually deem as heroes – adored, admired or worshipped. According to the exhibition notes, the work “speaks of idolatry and the deconstruction of neo-deities. Two main points of the installation are the relic (cross) and the poon or the image of Christ which represents our cultural past (being 400 years under Spain and several years in Hollywood), and the transformation of the deity from the Greco-Roman statuette to an epitome of neo-liberal economy respectively. Basically, all the pieces reflect to neo-deities that are everywhere, but we are in denial that these exist and are actually happening.”
The work is not new. Elements of it have been exhibited by the artist in numerous occasions in the past, the earliest was at the UP Vargas Museum way back in 2002. This was followed by a show called Santong Pinagpasasaan at Kulay Diwa Art Galleries in 2005; then in 2007 it was shown at the Ateneo de Manila and the University of the Philippines including images of it shown in the music video Anghel Sa Lupa . Why then, despite having been actually shown in several exhibitions in the past, it never got the attention of the public the same way as it does now?

    Yet, According to him...

The basic concept of “Poleteismo” is still the same but the work is constantly changing both in concept and in form. In the present setup in CCP you can look in the center of the relic (cross) and you will see literally your own reflection from the convex mirror attached to it and the wall collage behind you, which is figuratively another reflection…this is to denote the continuous cycle of history. One signifier that has been newly adopted in my piece is the symbol for “source of power”. At the UP Vargas Museum in 2002 I initially signified power with the use of a line of electrical sockets shaped into a cross and installed light bulbs all over the wall which was plugged to the “electric cross”. This time in CCP I used the phallic to denote power, a symbolism that could be attributed to patriarchy and feudalism.

I feel that some people just want to look at the surface -- they forgot that some of the phallic wore election wrist bands to symbolize political power. (a lot of them though went missing after the opening)
    ==============================
Well for me, I don't it find insulting as long as you understand deeply his works.
    Read those high lightened words.

I am a Catholic, but some die hard devotees are just pushy and yet, there are also some poseur Atheist messing up with this work.

CCP president Emily Abrera defended the work on Wednesday, saying it was part of the artist’s duty to challenge prevailing beliefs.
I think the artist has done his job well. He wants you to think and re-think your beliefs. How you reacted to a p3nis placed on the symbol of your deity reflects how you view s3xuality & religion. This reflects on the state of our society and our ideologies. Just read on the comments in the article link and the Facebook page here and you'll see. Some are offended, some are not; some turn violent, some appreciate his work; some think it's amusing. You should ask yourselves questions : Why does this offend you? What defines holiness and sacredness? And so forth..

For some people, it's discomforting to open their minds to new ideas or views other than their own. They automatically criticize or reject something they do not yet understand or have biases against. There's nothing beyond their reaction and icky feelings towards it and that's that for them. There's more to art than pictures of pretty flowers in vases or perfect landscapes conveying happiness and beauty.

“In a decaying society, art, if it is truthful, must also reflect decay. And unless it wants to break faith with its social function, art must show the world as changeable. And help to change it.”
    -Ernst Fischer

I think anybody will react (get mad) especially if a picture of you has a p*n*s stick on it. It is an insult to the person concerned. Just imagine a picture of MR. CRUZ, then I will put a p*n*s on his face, would you think he would be happy?

CCP closes gallery with controversial artwork

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) has decided to temporarily shut down the gallery that houses artist Mideo Cruz's controversial artworks.

Cruz's art installation "Politeismo" depicted a version of Jesus Christ as a mouse and also showed other religious objects juxtaposed with a red ***** or other odd objects, which critics described as "blasphemous" and "sacrilegious."

While CCP said it will "continue to act as catalyst for free expression of Filipino artists," it said they are now taking steps to "make more informed decisions in the future." A statue of Jesus Christ with Mickey Mouse ears and a clown nose is seen among the art …

"This decision was made amidst controversy and deliberation by the Board as to what steps are necessary to avoid future similar incidents," the CCP said in a statement Tuesday.

CCP said the exhibit did not only drew flak, as it also exposed the institution to security threats.

"Threats to security became most alarming on Aug. 4 when Security reported that a couple had vandalized the art works and attempted to set fire to the exhibit but had been unsuccessful," he CCP said.

Members of the CCP Board also started to receive hate mails and threats.

The exhibit 'Kulo' is a compilation of work by 32 artists and was hinged on Jose Rizal's 150th year.

"Because all the participating artists had a common educational background, all having studied at the UST, they felt it fitting that the theme of Jose Rizal also reflect the heritage and culture represented by the 400-year old university," CCP said in its backgrounder.

CCP said "Politeismo" was not new as it had been featured in exhibits in Ateneo de Manila, UP Vargas Musueum and Kulay Diwa since 2002.
