The presence of a "domain" suggests that the network environment is presided over by some flavor of Windows Server that acts as the domain controller. The DC basically controls user authentication and access to network resources based on the user's rights and privileges. XP home AFAIK cannot be a member of a domain. Workgroups are a step lower in the networking heirarchy, although resource-level authentication is available, this is not an efficient method to manage the network. While one can wander and visit workgroups, one has to be an authenticated user before it can logon to a domain environment. And yes, at any one time, a computer can only be a member of a workgroup.
